The problem may not necessarily be a bad O2 sensor. An incorrect air fuel mixture may also trigger this error.

To see if the air fuel mixture is right you may have to check the ignition for bad plugs or coils. Check the vacuum hoses to and from the engine for leaks, cracks or loose connections. Check also the timing. Inspect the throttle body or the actual intake manifold for build up of dirt. A bad injector could also be the culprit.

The error code Po131 is for the sensor before the catalytic converter. Inspect the cables and the socket of the sensor. Check also for leaks in the exhaust.

Kia sorento 2005 check engine light code po171

unless you do something to fix the problem , it will come up again
the sensor at fault will be the heated oxygen sensor(HO2S)in the exhaust manifold in bank one
It reports the gas composition to the ECM which then adjusts the air/fuel mixture to correct the lean burn

04 kia sorento, was running rough, changed plugs and wires, started it up, still running rough, after about 25 mins of it sitting there noticed that the passengers side exhaust around the sensor was...

At an idle, no car should have a red hot exhaust manifold. If it does, this could indicate a clogged Catalytic Converter. or a o2 sensor thats bad. I would not drive it until it gets fixed. convertor, timing, etc, just get it checked out! good-day !

P0157,P0161

Both codes indicate a a low voltage on the post catalytic converter O2 sensor
Check the wiring to the sensor.
An exhaust leak could also cause these codes to set

Any of the following issues can cause the codes to set
Most likely is a bad connection or faulty O2 sensor
  • Air leaks in exhaust in front of o2 sensor giving false reading
  • Engine running excessively lean
  • O2 sensor connector damaged/corroded
  • O2 sensor signal circuit is shorted to ground
  • O2 sensor ground circuit is open
  • O2 sensor has failed (it may be contaminated with fuel or coolant)
  • PCM has failed

Please tell me what this means,,, po171 band 1 system too lean and po174 band 2 system too lean, thank you, jill

PO 171--is an O2 Sensor Code for a Lean Condition
on Bank 1 (right side exhaust)

PO 174 -- is an O2 Sensor Codes for a Lean Condition
on Bank 2 (left side exhaust)

You gave us no vehicle
You gave us no drivability issues or
vehicle history,nothing

If the O2's have 100,000 miles on them, change the (2)
closest to the engine. They are most likely worn out
& the switching times are too slow to control injector
pulse width & thus set a MIL Lamp (OBD2 Fault ) on
your dash

You can learn a lot on the internet if you put OBD2 in your
Search Engine (Internet Explorer,etc)

04 kia sorento runs poorly

Might be going super simple here but from what you have said have you checked the wiring on your sensors? If you know that one works and you swap it and its not working its very possible the wires farther up are shorted or burned somewhere.
