HIGH TEMPERATURE OVER HEATING, DESPITE 4E ENGINE CHANGED, NO THERMOSTAT USED, RADIATOR HAS NO LEAKS EITHER, ALL HOSES GOOD.

After it's hot ,shut it off and see if the bottom of the radiator is colder than the top(on the core fins ) if they are colder at the bottom the radiator is plugged up.May as well replace it.
Also,the car will run a bit hotter without the thermostat because the coolant flows too fast to give the radiator time to cool it.
The thermostat controls the minimum temp not the max.

You need to check coolant circulation and coolant temperature. Also check for active bubbles in coolant even cold. Its possible there is poor coolant flow, poor cooling of the coolant, or the head or gasket have been damaged and are allowing compression to escape into the cooling system and superheat it. This will be seen as greay steaming bubbles floating up in the radiator or overflow tank and popping despite the fact the tank or radiator is full and not that hot, the bubbles will be steam pockets escaping as air and extremely scalding! (Danger!).

The tools Id use are a IR temo gun to check actual coolant temp and possibly temp across the hoses and the radiator itself. Then you want to verify all cooling components (fans, shrouds, thermostat, water pump(s)) are all doing their jobs. If all that checks out and system is full and holds pressure, youll wanna check internal engine leaks making temperature go high.

Why does my 2001 mitsubishi galant over heat still after I replaced the radiator and replaced the heater core?


check thermostat and replace if deffective. easy way to check is start car after a few minutes check upper and lower hose for equal temp. if upper is much cooler than lower hose change thermostat

Hi Kim,

I can feel your frustration. It sounds like you've done all the logical stuff already. The "donut hole" in your process would seem to be not changing the water pump. The water pump as you might imagine, is responsible for circulating (pumping) the relatively cool water in the radiator into the running engine that contains the hot water. Hoses connect the two together. A thermostat is between the radiator and the engine. Once the water in the running engine gets to a certain temperature, the thermostat opens allowing the water pump to send cool water into the engine and hot water out to the radiator to be cooled. The heater core is usually on the passenger side firewall area.

It sounds like the water pump is the only thing left to change - if it isn't working - it can't circulate the water - and will result in overheating. Lastly, a clogged heater core shouldn't cause the engine to overheat - in fact, if the engine begins to overheat, you should turn the heat to HIGH fan and HIGH temperature to help remove some of the heat in the coolant.

My 99 alero v6 is over heating not leaking ight mite be hoses or thermostat . or head gasket but when it overb heats the smoke comes from the top of the engine

It sounds like your thermostat could be stuck. The thermostat is located inside the upper radiator hose where it connects to the front of the motor. It can be removed to check if that is the problem. Undo the clamp on the upper radiator hose where it attaches on the top front of the motor and pull off the hose. You will see the round thermostat in the "neck" where the hose was mounted. Remove it with a screwdriver. Put the hose back on and clamp it tight. Fill your radiator back up to replace the water you have lost when undoing the radiator hose. Once the water level is full, start the motor and see if it still overheats. If it runs properly without overheating, the problem was the thermostat. Get a new thermostat and replace it where the old one was taken out. Make sure it is reinstalled in the right direction as there is a backwards and forwards on these.

Mini is engine is heating up and no heat in cabin, I want to replace the thermostat but need to know where and how


I think it's right under the coolant fill cap. I have a 2003 mini, and I can see the radiator hose going in there, but it's hard to look in. I copied the instructions from autozone.com and will paste them below. The instructions don't mention it, but I think you will need to remove the air filter housing to access the thermostat housing bolts. Also, there is a bleeder port on the upper radiator hose that I would crack open after the job is done to let any air out. The instructions don't mention that either, but it's always good to bleed the system. Let me know if you have more questions.

If the radiator is filled to the top with coolant and the engine is run without the radiator cap in place, the coolant will expand and spill over as the engine warms up.
  • Drain some coolant into a clean container until the coolant level is below the thermostat housing.
  • Remove the upper radiator hose connection from the thermostat housing.
  • Loosen the housing bolts and remove the housing.
  • Remove the gasket and scrape it carefully from the surface of the housing and the mounting surface on the engine. If the gasket remains on either of the surfaces, there will probably bea coolant leak after reassembly. Some engines use a rubber O-ring to seal a thermostat housing.
  • Compare the size of the thermostat to the old one. They are of different sizes, types, and temperature ratings.
  • The temperature rating is stamped on the sensing bulb on the bottom of the thermostat. The temperature bulb faces the block.
  • When replacing a thermostat, be sure that the thermostat fits into the groove in the block or outlet housing. If the thermostat is installed upside down, the engine will overheat.
  • Install the gasket.
  • Reinstall the thermostat housing. Refill the system and run the engine or pressure test to check for leaks.
  • When the engine has reached operating temperature make sure the thermostat opens.
  • You should be able to see coolant circulating within the radiator.
  • Another way of checking thermostat operation is to feel the top of the radiator hose or use a thermometer or multimeter with a temperature probe to confirm that the coolant is warming up.
  • If the engine is overheating, but the top hose is still cool to the touch, the thermostat is stuck closed and must be replaced.
NOTE
When a paper gasket is used and the recess is in the thermostat housing, it is a good practice to position the thermostat into the recess and glue the gasket to hold it in place. If it falls out of its groove during installation, the outlet housing can be cracked or a coolant leak will result. Before tightening the water outlet housing, try to rock it back and forth to be sure it is flush. Housings are often cracked during this step.

Better make sure the fan works. There is a switch on the radiator that turns the fan on when it gets to a certain temperature. It could be the fan or the switch. Your thermostat is not your cap, it's in a different location. (Usually at the engine end of the upper radiator hose) Get the leak check! A good garage can pressure test the system to see what leaks you might have.

No heat


Some of your hoses may be clogged up. I suggest having your radiator flushed and your thermostat changed. The thermostat causes more or less water to flow according to water temperature. This is what keeps your engine at a good temperature.
