Some of these vans have what they call a hydra boost brake system where the master cylinder and power steering are linked so no vacuum is needed. check for a leak in the system. check all hoses and fluid levels.

My chevrolet astro lost power steering and the brakes are hard

Your van sounds like it has hydro-boost.It uses the power steering for brake boost instead of engine vacumme.More than likely you have had a power steering pump failure.

I have a 1995 chevy astro van and the breaks and steering have lost power. The fluid's are full, and I can not detect any broken lines. What could it be?

Your van don't have the regular air (vacum) power brake booster, your has a hydraboost brake booster, which is power by your power steering pump, if power steering pump goes bad you will not have power steering or brakes, brake peddle will feel very hard and will take alot of pressure on the brake peddle to stop your van, more the likely your power steering pump is bad.

Lost power steering and brakes on 96 Astro

Hello altgraph1: My name is Roger and I can help. The power steering and the brakes are directly connected. If the power steering pump fails you will also loose the brake assist. This vehicle does not have a vacuum booster you have a hydro-boost brake system. This unit uses the power steering pressure to assist the stopping of the vehicle. You will need special tools to determine if the power steering pump failed or if the hydro-boost system failed. Most likely the power steering pump failed. How ever to be sure it should be tested first. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer you received. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger

Power steering falure

If your van has a hydra-boost then is could see the association. But if not then no. It sounds like you need new P/S pump and if you have a braking issue would you describe exactly what the symptoms are.

It has a hydraboost brake booster right? Sounds like a bad Power steering pump. The belt is still on it right?

Hard to turn the steering wheel?

on the astro vans they used a hydroboost power brake booster which is driven off the power sterring pump. If you are having brake and steering problems you should check to make sure your belt is still on if it is you probably need a new powersteering pump. You may also check your power sterring pump pulley.if this helps please rate

97 astro brakes and steering out

if this car uses the power steering pump to help with the brakes it is possible that the pump went out or possibly the belt broke as well.

Mine just did same (2001). Have them check the power steering pump--shaft broke in mine. This affects the brakes as well since both power brakes and power steering run off same system in Astros. Broken shaft messed up the booster system.
