If it is a power roof you need to check the fuse that controls the roof.

About alternator replacement for 2001 vw beetle gls...I've removed the upper and lower bolts... What am I missing? Alternator still won't budge. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

all the bolts removed then all thats holding it is the adjustable tube in on the lower fitting ,put a bar in and try moving it then it will move as on the lower fitting with the long bolt is a tube in the alternator housing bracket and this is pulled or pushed out to make contact with the support bracket .Check you havent got three bolts holding it as some vehicles have two bolts on the bottom bracket or one long one

The beetle has also been recalled for a sunroof issue, I found this website:-

http://newbeetle.org/forums/questions-issues-concerns-problems-new-beetle/43357-new-sunroof-recall.html

Where it says:-

"Sorry if I put this in the wrong place but I just got a recall notice for the sunroof drains on my bug.
It's SERVICE ACTION 60A7/S9 and pertains to all NBs from 2001 - 2007 equipped with sunroofs. It's also for certain Jettas, Audi A4s, Golfs, GTI, and Passats. You'll probably get a notice but I wanted to let people know just in case, for some reason, they don't get the notification...maybe because they're not an original owner etc.

VW will clean, modify and inspect the sunroof drains and tubes. There's also a form to be reimbursed if you've had to pay for any problems in the past".

Which means that, if you or your car didn't go to this recall, then VW will sort it all out for you for for free. Its a manufacturer's problem.

Just pop in to a dealership and ask, if its been done, you're back to square one but its worth a crack................. Good Luck.

However, here's a website which shows you how to service your sunroof.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You must have the security anti-theft code for yours VW radio from the car manufacturer! For VW radio the sequence of programming is:
1. Push simultaneous "SCAN" and "RDS" keys until on the screen will appear "1000" displayed.
2. Release keys. No more push on "SCAN" and "RDS" keys because otherwise number "1000" will be considered as first safe code attempt.
3. By the #1 key you will set up the first safe code digit.
4. By the #2 key you will set up the second safe code digit.
5. By the #3 key you will set up the third safe code digit.
6. By the #4 key you will set up the four-th safe code digit.
7. Then push again simultaneous "SCAN" and "RDS" keys for confirm this safe code. On the screen will be displayed "SAFE" notice. Release keys! For few seconds a radio frequence will be displayed. The radio is now ready for use!

Please rate my response. Thanks!

2003 beetle convertible top detached from window

My problem has been solved. I contacted the VW Customer Service and spoke with an advocate. The advocate and my dealership reached a conclusion and VW has decided to replace the items to alleviate my problem at their cost. Sometimes, dreams come true. Good luck to all of you who have similar problems with your VW Beetle convertible. It took quite a lot of patience and determination on my part, but the VW advocate was sympathetic to my plight since I'd never taken the vehicle anywhere else but the dealership for all repairs. The repairs have not been completed yet, so I cannot say whether or not the dilemma is, indeed, solved.

Catalylic converter 2001 VW Beetle

Actually, at 70,000 miles, the dealer should HAVE to replace the catalytic converter, I'm quite sure that ALL converters are federally mandated to be covered up till 80,000 miles (or 90, somewhere like that, but more than 70). So raise hell at your local dealer (and look up more on the info i suggested). If all else fails, it's not hard, 4 or 6 bolts from the flex pipe to the manifold , 13mm bolts holding the hanger, and 16(or 17mm) bolts holding the joining peice at the back. To get the clamp joiner, after you loosen it, hit it towards the back with a hammer, it'll move slowly, but it'll move. also, major tip : USE LOTS OF PB Blaster or WD40, soak down the bolts you want to remove, let them sit for 10 min, then soak them again, then try to remove, if they don't come loose, soak, try harder, and if they loosen some, just work back and forth.

2003 new beetle top won't go up

Try resetting the pinch protection program. You do this by inserting the key into the drivers side door, turning to the right and holding untill the windows are fully raised. Then you turn to the left and hold untill the windows are fully lowered. This is supposed to reset the program.

Good luck.
