Light came on in May right before Inspection was needed. I spent over 700.00 changing plugs, gas cap, etc... Finally got it inspected and the light came on again. Mechanic changed Fuel Pressure Hose and again the light is on. Went back told me the Gas cap was loose- reset it- on again. Up to 1,000.00 in Repairs and still don't know exactly why the light is coming on? Please help- if you can.

The engine light is telling you that you have what they call a "hard Code" that means that one of the sensors is getting a reading that is way out of specs.

You should take you car to one of the local parts houses, ie Auto Zone, O'Reilly's and have them hook up their reader and tell you what the code(s) are.

Then you can come back on and we will do what we can to assist you.

I also have the same problem with the engine light staying on all the time. Was told by a mechanic friend after he reset the computer that it has something to do with the wiring on the exhaust harness getting moisture and causing a miss-reading. Nothing serious to worry about, just a pain in the ***

My engine is on ALL the time as well...I've taken it to a shop 3 times in the past 3 months, and it's always the same thing. The gas cap wasn't on tight enough.

Engine light stays on while running, low idle

You need to have the pcm scanned for fault codes. If it is newer than a 1996 model, Autozone will scan it for free and tell you the fault codes. A mechanic would go from there, based on what the codes reveal. The low idle is probably a symptom of the fault.
Anytime the MIL light stays on with the engine running, the pcm (engine computer) has detected a fault and will turn the light on. It also stores a trouble code in memory, maybe called a pending code if only recently started, but the code can be found with a hand held scanner, hooked up to the port under the dash for code retrieval.
When you have done the repairs, and the old codes erased, you will see that the engine light always turns on when the key is turned on. If there are no more problems , the light will go out very quickly after the engine is running. It is a bulb and computer check that the light is on with key on, and stays on until the engine is started.

Oil light stays on when engine running

Check the actual pressure, with a guage.
This is usually done via the oil pressure switch hole. It the engine has fewhoudrs then the oil bypass valve is stuck in the open position.
This is located inside or as a part of the oil pump itself.

Engine light stays on, then engine light flashes while running crappy. If I touch the gas pedal just right engine runs fine and light stops flashing(but stays on). 1996 cavalier 2.4L OHV.

Most local parts stores like Autozone or Advance auto will check the trouble codes for free and help you get the parts you need to fix whatever is causing the engine light to come on.

Yellow engine check light stays on

take the car to dealership and get them to cancel the fault memory of the engine control unit. Then if the warning light comes back on you will need a full diagnosis check to establish what is causing thefault.

Cooling light stays on

If you are referring to the blue temp light on the dash, it stays on until the engine has reached operating temperature. This lets you know the heat will be ineffective and the engine will not be running at peak efficiency during this time.
