If u have a key u should measure the ohms with a ohmmeter of the chip. then find 1 with a similar reading

You don't. Any close GM dealer should be able to get you going again, it shouldn't need to be a Buick dealer.

If you have the early key with a small plastic pc with whart looks like a thin pc of metal in the middle then that is a resistor. They made 15-20 different resistor keys. Did the locksmith have a way to test to determine which resistor the car used? If not you may have the wrong key. The dealer has a tool to check this.

Turn igintion switch, engine won't start


try to clean both side of the key where the little resistor (some people call it chip)with rubbing alcohol
or try your spare key
you can check the resistor with DVOM (digital volt,ohm meter)
put black lid on one side and red on the other side while set on ohm or kilo ohm
if it shows it is open ,you need new key
don't let lock smith guy or dealer say it need to programmed
find the right value of resistance and get on eBay

all it is, just resistor to complete the vat circuit,and tell pcm to send the voltage to your starter solenoid

yes, but only at the GM dealer. Your key has a resistor on it, right? That resistor has to match the system, and the dealer knows which key to make.

I hav the keys from the old car and the speedometer do i still have to take it to the dealer to get pass the security problm i replaced the chips in the keys but my stereo says locked the motor turns but...


It is possible IF you have the ORIGINAL keys to the car to read the resistance of the original key, use Radio Shack resistors and build an IN-LINE resistor to replace the key's requirement to have the chip. After you know the correct resistance for your car, purchase enough resistors to wire in-line to create the right resistance, then in the steering column you will find two micro-sized wires, usually yellow (DO NOT CUT the slightly heavier Air Bag yellow wires). Cut the two yellow micro-sized wires wire your homemade resistor in line between them, tape all of your wiring up good and try to start it... As far as the dash goes, yes you should still have to go to a dealer to reprogram the computer..., You might just consider takng it in anyhow and doing it right.

Lost my last igniton key


15 different coded keys. these are resistor pellets . ranging in different ohm values if you got a key cut that will turn the cylinder, try google ( passkey ii bypass ) there is a listing of all the ohms radio shack and purchase all of them $30 give or take, get to the two small orange wires around the lock cylinder and cut them close to the lock intall the resistors one at a time in place of where the lock would be ,until you hit the one that lets it stay cranked. no more resistor key needed

There are 2 factory alarms on your car...VATS is the one with the resistor pellet in the key. 1) make sure the key you are using is clean at the pellet, any dirt will incease the resistor value. 2) if you have an after market alarm, make sure its door lock output is the same as the vettes (+ ground, - ground, or relay) 3) if your cars is all factory stuff, your VATS module may be bad [the least likely). Suggest a bypass kit...search 'VATS values' and match the resistance with the value of your key 1-15. If your key has a super warn pellet, you can match the resistance value on your key to a guy on ebay 1-15, buy the key on ebay for $15 and have anyone cut it..or go to a dealer and drop $50. BTW --your starter kill delay should only be 5-8 minutes.
