Question about 1993 Volvo 240

Sticky thermostat ?? 1987 240DL Volvo. Every morning on the way to work after about a 5 minute warmup in the garage and a mile or so down the road the heat guage goes from midrange to way high (near max) and stays there about 30 seconds then goes back to midrange and is good for the rest of the 45 minute commute. Is this a sticky thermostat ?

More likely a compensator board in the back of the temperature gauge.

Yesterday temp gauge began rising. Went to top. Stopped. Let it cool down. Repeated 4 times on 25 mile drive home. This morning put water in reservoir. Gauge rose quickly to normal & stayed. ...


Probably a cooling fan issue or maybe a stuck thermostat.. change thermostat and check that cooling fans engage..good luck...also when you fill up the resorvoir let it be for a while and check to see if level is down, sometimes it takes a while for water to seep into radiator, i assume you dont have a radiator cap?

codem p 0203 refers to injector 3---circuit malfunction===causes wiring--injector--ECM
chweck for harness connection , bad wire for no 3 injector or corroded pins for no 3 injector in the connection

It sounds like the air bypass valve is not closing after warmup and this sounds like a temperature related problem. Air bypass is used much like the old choke on carburated cars for cold starts.

sounds like you need to change the thermostat/check the fans work as they should(poss overheating)????this would not show up on any diagnostics....

That sounds like a thermostat. Usually not an expensive problem, but one you want to address soon. Right now, it's convinced that the engine is hot, and is wide open. It could easily flip to thinking that the engine is cold and stick closed. THEN your radiator WILL boil over.

2000 volvo s40 overheated


No lights came on when it overheated.
The thermostat went to the red immediately!!!!! I pulled over to the side of the road. In the morning the mechanic tried turning the engine over, did not turn over. He says it needs a engine. He wants to put in a used engine with 70,000 miles and charge me $3900.00. I am skeptical. Can it just be the head and it needs fixing???? Thank-you for your response.
