Question about 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Hey guys i have a 2000 intrepid with a used engine just put in. at high rev the check engine light flickers then goes off. Took a trip to West Linn OR from Weiser ID, on the way back the check engine light came on and wont go off. Had the autozone check it the computer said 4 of the 6 cylinders were misfiring but the car purs. You feel no miss at all. When the spark plugs were replaced we didnt use the gel that we were told to put into the housing for the plugs they said something about direct fire. would the spark come out of the housing and show misfire on 4 cylinder if the gel is not used???

Dysturbedr1,
In a word, NO- don't worry about the gel. There are 2 different kinds of "goop" that is sold for installing new plugs- one is to lubricate the spark plug threads, and the other (which I think you are calling the "gel") is to lubricate the boot and direct fire coilpacks. These are for making it easier to install and replace your plugs and coilpacks....nothing more.
The flickering check engine light is indicative of a misfire condition, which makes sense since your codes said the same thing. The most common cause for this is using a non-premium grade of gasoline or a gas with a high ethanol content (very common in the Mid-West) in a high compression engine such as yours. I had a 2001 Subaru with a high compression 3.0L 6 cylinder engine that did the exact same thing.... it ran fine, but a lower grade of gas would cause a "misfire" code. This is because lower grades of gas burn hotter and the piezo sensors in your engine are very sensitive- the explosion that takes place in a cylinder is much more pronounced with a lower grade gas to the sensor, even though it sounds fine to human ears.
Fill your car with permium, then go back to autozone and have them clear the codes. You will probably not have it happen again unless you go back to a lower gas grade.... and stay away from the Idaho Gasahol!

Good Luck, and Thank You for using FixYa!

If you didnt use the gel there is a high possibility the direct heat of the combustion against the ceramic on the plug caused the ceramic to crack. that would explain why it only does it at high rpms and you may not feel it at normal speed. replace the spark plugs and use the gel to prevent cracking the plugs.

Gel ON the PLUGS? IN the CYLINDER? Plugs use ceramic around the electrode specifically to properly distribute the heat of ignition, and have been designed like that for well over 40 years. Put the gel on your plugs ceramics and let us know how your car runs.

Do you have a check engine light on? Are you saying that the engine idle speed is excessively high? If that is the case have you checked for intake manifold vacuum leaks?

The first thing I would suspect, would be the MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor. They can be quite expensive so, have a tech get a computer reading from your engine to pinpoint the problem. You can also buy a reader and do it yourself if you plan to keep the car for a while.

Idleing

Could be a dirty IAC (idle air control) and it's causing it to run high, also, could be a tstat going bad because it would make it run like it was cold all day...check your temp after driving for a while....see if it's lower than it should be.

Ran scans and came up with intermittant signal

replace the PCV valve, its cheap, causes THAT to happen when dirty, and takes about ten minutes if you are comfortable working under the hood.

Stalls when i put it into gear

Is the check engine light on? If so I would have a scanner put on it and have the codes read.. Otherwise it may be hard to determine. It may be the vacuum actuator on the tranny. It would be good idea to have fuel pressure checked and also any vacuum hoses.

2000 dodge intrepid 2.7 sputtering, revs up

you need to ck some basics you could have a vacuum leak which would hide during warm up but cause havoc when hot,the leak would cause high idle then your pcm would try to lower idle to spec thru use of idle control motor causing surging idle ,also fuel pressure needs to be checked while acting up,may be more cost effective to pay for an hour of diagnostic.

I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid that will not start unless I have an external 12v power supply hooked up to it. The battery is only 3 months old. After getting it started the battery indicator comes on and...

How many volts do you have when before you try to start your car? It seems as if your battery is not holding a charge, being that you are getting enough volts to charge the battery. I would check the fluid level inside the battery and fill it up with distilled water if needed. Also it wouldn't hurt to clean the battery terminals and wire connectors. Also make sure that the connection is at the top of the terminal and not the bottom (nearest the battery casing).
