Brakes make a whistle noise when applied and sometimes a low grown or grinding when coming to a slow stop or start.

A grinding or rumbling noise can also be symptoms of a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint in a driveshaft. A worn wheel bearing can also cause a 'whistling' sound (as can a worn CV joint).

A grinding noise with brakes is either worn pads causing metal to metal contact on the brake disk/rotor, or the brake backing plate catching on a spinning rotor ... or a loose/missing anti squeal brake shim (they stop the pads from rattling and vibrating).

However, as you say a mechanic has looked at the brakes and can't find anything wrong .. I think I would begin to suspect a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint on the driveshaft (front wheel drive cars).

Bear tracker squealing noise when trying to start after running it goes away help please it sat for a year before got rear end fixed

Joe, do you mean a bearing track?
If so, a bearing -or track - usually makes a grinding or knocking noise, not a squealing noise.

If a car stands for a long time the brake rotors can corrode a bit and the pads can stick. Sometimes, when the car is first used after standing, you may hear a rubbing or squealing noise from the wheel. That's the pads sticking to a rusty rotor. The noise may wear off after a few miles when the pads 'polish' the corrosion off the rotor.

The other thing that causes squealing from a wheel are the brake shims. Try cleaning things first.

Tensioner bolt bottoms out on idler pulley (belt for Poly-V A/C & Idler) on 2000 Nissan Pathfinder SE

Pulleys also wear.
You've changed the belts - a workshop would then change that particular pulley, if asked to do so.

Start your engine, then put a few drops of water onto that pulley. Does the squealing noise disappear? If so, the pulley is slightly worn in the groove - and this happens to all vehicles.

Your option is to either replace that pulley or use a spray-on anti squeal compound.

Noise in engine compartment - chirping, then loud squeal

try having the radiator cap checked for performance. It is not in the engine as any change in rpms would cause a corresponding change in frequency and volume of the noise. However if there is a problem in the cooling system ( leaking head gasket etc) then as the pressure builds up and escapes from under the radiator cap it will give the same affect as a bad tap washer in the household plumbing. Turn it on slightly and the water squeals as it comes out ( tap washer vibrating from pressure fluctuations. I would suggest that a coolant pressure test and a compression test may be in order to eliminate what I have suggested.

Alternator pulley shears off. Alternator is about 1 year old. The last few times I started the car there was a hard screech noise (like metal clanging) coming from the area around the serpentine belt....

If the bolt was lose and caused the pulley to bend down the power behind the belt was too great and sheared the pulley. Check belt for damage and replace pulley.

Before replacing the ignition switch, I think it would be wise to advise you that an ignition switch failure causing the symptoms you are describing is rare. If you have any aftermarket accessories installed on your vehicle(like a remote start system or alarm system. I would suspect that as the cause first.

STEERING LOCK AND IGNITION SWITCH

REMOVAL

1. Remove steering wheel if necessary for access. Remove upper and lower steering column covers. Disconnect ignition switch wiring harness connectors. If shear bolts are accessable, use a hacksaw to cut slots in exposed sheer bolt studs. Use a flat screwdriver to remove sheer bolts.

2. If sheer bolt studs are recessed or hard to reach, use a hammer and punch to center-punch shear bolts and drill a hole so a screw extractor can be used to remove them. Remove steering lock and ignition switch.

INSTALLATION

1. Install ignition switch and steering lock. Finger tighten sheer bolts. Ensure proper operation of steering lock and ignition switch.

2. Tighten shear bolts until heads break off.
To complete installation, reverse removal

It doesn't happen everytime but the first time I start my Honda Pilot in the morning it makes a squealing noise. It's a one time squeal and stops. Had the alternator belt replaced and 3 days later the...

the noise is the alternator belt, what maybe going on is you need an alternator. it could be that there is a bearing that is ceasing up when it cools down and when you start it up it takes a min. to get spinning and this is causing to much drag on the belt and making it squeal.

you need to check the front brake pads to see if the warning tab is touching the rotor ,this will squeal if the pads get worn out before it goes metal to metal, and if that is ok the only thing i would think of is the wheel bearing,

My car starts ok but a bad banging noise happens ,it is automatic, could it be something to do with the weather,it has antifreeze in help

hi thanks for update if as you say this just happened as you turned key to start? if you say noise is heavy banging and possibly around the rear/of engine adjoining the g/box? this sounds like the adaptor plate that is fixed/secured to crank flywheel and has the torque convertor bolted to it? these plates sometimes crack or the bolts securing t/convertor come loose and causes banging due to movement with the same sudden starting as your symptoms however if you wish to diy check? disconnect earth lead on battery then remove starter motor after disconnection of leads then you should see through starter mountinghole the flywheel? and a series of bolts/heads if you turn engine clockwise by hand use a socket+bar to check these bolts for secure? should have 6 or more?? around the circumference ? if loose? retighten? but if sheared then box has to come out for further investigationas to damage? sorry but let's not think negative waves eh? will keep fingers crossed for good luck ?
