The idle/air control valve is either dirty or faulty. remove the valve and spray some brake cleaner in it, use the whole can to make sure you really get it clean. also try getting some mass airflow sensor cleaner, could be part of the problem. the control valve is located next to the air filter box. small metal cylinder with a couplevacuum lines attached. shouldnt be too hard to find. let me know if that fixes it.

1993 ford ranger has a hard time starting when cold but once it warms up it runs good an the brake lights won't work unless the light switch is on

hi i had a 1994 ranger with the same problem everybody said change the coolent temp cencer so i did it didnt realy seem to help so then i thought and thought and i realized that mabey my starter is worn and doesnt have the whirl power to start it (even though the starter sounds fine doesnt mean its not worn) so i replaced it with a brand new one and it started every time real quick after no matter how cold and later on found out this is a common problem with the ranger. good luck hpoe this works for you

I have a 1987 ranger 2.3 EFI and sometimes it will not start when it's cold. after it warms up outside it starts. When it does start it runs great. It always starts when warm. some times it will

Timing belt being off one tooth will not cause this problem but rather loss of power and hard starting all the time,

in the cold it will not start, the engine will spin but wont fire is this correct?

There are many things that can cause this, a little testing will be needed, the first thing that comes to mind with the ford and cold weather is the coolant temp sensor, it give computer a false reading and can cause hard starting or even no start, a scan tool would be helpful to see what temp it is give computer.
The best way to narrow this down to to check for spark when it wont start, a weak coil in cold weather will cause this problem or bad coil wire to cap, but if you can see if it has spark and let me know,
another test is to check fuel pressure, to see if it is getting fuel, and the fuelpump relay,

Let me know if it has spark or fuel when is does not start, good day

Vehicle cuts out and even backfires (blacksmoke) when driving down road does not die just does not run smooth. Changed oil twice oil is black, fluids to help clean, pluggs are good, wires are good when it...

If it seems to run better when it's first started (cold) and gets worse as it warms up. You can try disconnecting the coolant temp sensor and jumper the terminals in the connector (wire side) with a paper clip. The coolant temp sensor is either in the intake manifold or the thermostat housing and has a 2 wire connector. Jumping the connector will make the computer think that the engine is hot (warmed up) and will not richen the system. If doing this helps then replace the coolant temp sensor. Hope this is helpful.
