Question about 2000 Cadillac Catera

1 Answer

Just bought a cherry 2000 Catera, obviously well taken care of, with 66K miles. Car drives like a dream, but noticed the rotten egg exhaust smell (intermittently), and apparent low oil pressure via the dash gauge. There appears to be a minor leak from the oil pan area, but it may be coming from above. Any advice is really appreciated.

Sounds to be maybe a oil pan leak, may need replaced, As for the smell you may want to take to muffler shop and get your catalic converter, checked. good luck to you.

Whats the problem smells like rotten eggs,no power, car chugs and bogs down ?

Sounds to me like the catalytic converter is shot. The "rotten egg" smell and stalling out is a dead giveaway. The converter is plugged up and cannot let the exhaust out of the tail pipe like it should. The exhaust is building up back pressure in the exhaust system, causing the engine to lose power and stall. Take it to a qualified shop and have the catalytic converter replaced.

Smells like rotten eggs

it is happen to old engine because the oil that escape from the engine(engine cover near the exhaust) when it is got hot it sends bad smell but after how many minutes if it already dried up because of heat it will gone (like frying using the used cooking oil in pan there is a different smell).

I have only 47,000 miles on my car but the exhaust smell in the car is bad.

if it smell like rotten eggs then you need to get the catalytic converter removed. if it smells like normal exhaust smell then you either have a hole in your exhaust under the car or the tail pipe is to close to the boot and letting in exhaust gasses. I had the same problem with my toyota hilux and found the exhaust gasses were getting in through the tail of the 4x4 cause the pipe was way to close to the boot

Car runs ok, but gets hot and rotten egg smell comes out of the exhaust

If car runs okay with egg smell, its normal and working the way it should, if car is running poorly and the rotten egg smell has gotten worse, its a sign that your exhaust catalytic converter will need to be replaced. good luck!

Miss fire inn an engine

Check to see the cavity in the spark plug wells are not filled with oil or water. I had #5 cylinder filled to the top with water....engine steam cleaned by previuos owner....misfire ran raw fuel into the catalytic, overheated andf lunched them.
Check the coil packs for proper operation.
Check the injectors.
Avoid driving the car like this. If you have rotten egg smell from's new catalytic time!

Rotten egg smell after new plugs and wires seems to miss now

did he gap the plugs properly? sulfur smell comes from excess fuel being dumped into the exhaust (catalytic converter). Could be the coil, or improperly gapped plugs. If the wires were out of order, there would be a misfire.
