Hydraulic lifters i just redone my engin and the lifters is makin a noise is it normal.

Hi, If they are new lifters they will take a little time to fill with oil then will stop tapping. Phil

Lifter noise(s) can be a combination of things........ 1. High mileage on engine. 2. Not using the correct oil. 3. Lots of sludge build up in motor due to lack of oil changes and the quality of oil that you are using. Hydraulic lifters rarely fail but it does happen, given the conditions on how the car was maintained. I can offer you a solution but no guarantees on what might quiet this lifter down. It's a 50/50 chance. On your next oil change, I would recommend taking your vehicle to a facility that sells BG products. It's a company that formulates chemicals that have great cleaning properties to your fuel system and oil lubricating systems in your engine and at the same time, it is safe on all rubber seals in your engine. (Especially Higher Milage Vehicles) Ask for BG MOA to be added in you next oil change or if you do your own oil changes, you can find this product on line and can purchase from there. What the BG MOA does, it helps break up sludge and build up on the inside of your engine and helps to free up your valves, piston rings and noisy lifter(s). Hydraulic lifter(s) tend to make noise when they can't sufficiently pump up with oil due to sludge and build up blocking the oil inlet passage. Worn lifters on cold start up may be very noticeable but eventually the ticking goes away after engine warms up and the hydraulic lifter(s) had time to pump up. Make sure that you don't have a exhaust manifold leaking as well due to a crack or a failing exhaust manifold gasket. This can also emit a ticking noise in which can be misdiagnosed for a ticking lifter. A leaking exhaust manifold can usually be identified by the ticking noise getting louder and faster when accelerating and quieter and slower when decelerating. Ticking noise is loud on cold start ups but not noticeable at all when engine is at operating temperature. Hope this will help you out.

Tikking noise coming from engine


Yes, you're right, those could be the cause. Also, possible it's a collapsed hydraulic valve lifter, if your car has hydraulic operated (from engine oil) valve lifters. At any rate, it sounds like something loose in the valve train-valve lifter with push rod engines; or cam followers {rocker arms) with overhead cam engines that push on the top of valve stems .
Check a repair manual to see if your engine has valves that can be and need adjusting. Engines with valve lifters do not require periodic adjustment for proper valve clearance. Engines with rocker arms do require checking the valve clearance every couple of years or so.

You should have hydraulic lifters, unless someone changed them along the way. Normally nobody puts solid lifters in a vehicle that is a driven on the street daily. That being said, the normal adjustment for hydraulic lifters is normally take all clearance out of rocker arm to lifter plus an extra 1/2 to 3/4 turn. I used to do this with the motor running, I would adjust it tighter till it quits rattling and then tighten an extra 1/2 turn. If the lifters are bad, however, the rattling will never go away. Auto trans... when first starting engine in morning and put into reverse or drive a loud noise coming from front end under bonnet. no noise if in park or neutral. noise goes away after a few minutes and...


not completely sure it has something to do with the auto trans, but more likely the hydraulic lifters. the older cars used to have a fixed valve clearance with tappets, but now they use hydraulic lifters. the problem with these is if you don't change the oil at a regular interval or do alot of stop-start driving, the oil becomes sludgy and does not flow into the small tolerance holes in the lifters. the beautiful thing about oil is that it thins out as it gets hotter to a point, so as the engine warms up, the oil thins out and flows into the lifter hydraulically pumping them up and closing the gap, i would suggest to change the engine oil to manufacturer's specs and add a "lifter free" product, after a few weeks it will reduce dramatically

I just bought a 2008 Sienna w/ 44,000 miles. When the engine is cold, doesn't have to be really cold, I hear this ticking noise (not loud) when engine is under slight acceleration between 1500- 2000 rpm....


Sounds like you are describing lifter noise. Go to the car store and buy a pint of Berrymen's Chemtool. Next time the engine is cold, pour the Chemtool into the engine oil. Do your normal driving for the next few days or weeks until you have 150-200 miles (none of them should be highway miles) on the engine, then have the oil changed. Drive for 2000-3000 miles, and do the same thing all over again. Repeat this a couple of times. If the lifter loosens up, your good to go. If it doesn't, then it will have to be repaired by tearing into the engine.

Engine runs good then I hear a tapping noise. could I have a bridge broke inside the engine? 1987 brougham with a 350 Olds motor.


noisy lifter is number one....get an addititive like hyper lube and run it 20 min on the freeway,. lifters are hydraulic and get gummed up with a varnish like substance. an additive dissolves it and restores the hydraulic lifters action,which operates the pushrods that operates the valves

Need to know if I can adjust the valves on 86 Ford Escort


normally they are not adjustable, look at your rocker arms, do they have a nut and screw threaded into them? if not they are not adjustable, are having trouble with lifter tapping noise? this happens to not adjustable valve engine due to lifter wear, the hydraulic lifters lose their ability to hold oil pressure so they create space instead of elimanating space, and should probably be replaced. Tappet noise


Sounds like worn lifter/cam lobe,quite normal when engine gets a few mles on it.Lifter is finding it hard to fill the extra clearance created by wear.What sort of oil are you using and is it clean?Wear in an engine will lower your overall oil pressure as well,not generaly enough to worry about but it does contribute to the problem.At idle or when cold is generaly when this happens?

ive had this problem the loud tapping noise if properly you have the wrong oil in the engine the lifters only have a very small hole in for the to get in so if it to thick it cant get in causing the slapping noise.
