Is the engine light on? if so it sounds like it is going into "Limp Mode". This mode protects your transmission from damage should an error occur. Most of the time this error is a sensor that is going or has gone bad. Most of the time it is a speed sensor. Yours has two of these called an "Input" and an "Output" speed sensor. Since your transmission is shifted by a software package rather than a mechanical valve body like older transmissions, it needs to know what is going on by info received from all of the system sensors. When one sends an impossable value state, the software will put the transmission in 2nd gear and not let it shift. This is done to protect you transmission from catastophic failure by accendentally being in two different gear ratios at the same time.

Sorry for the long description, force of habbit (I am a teacher)

You need to get the vehicle scanned at a trustworthy shop or dealer to determine what the code is. This will tell you what part is in question.

Also, just as a side note, check the transmission fluid level and make sure it is between add and full. Too much fluid can be just as bad as too little. And the fluid level can cause problems like these.

You may be having a problem with the starter itself. Sometimes when a starter begins to fail it will work at random. The quick check for this (if you can get to it) is to tap the starter with a hammer or something like that (not too hard) when it doesnt want to turn over. If it works suddenly then you may want to try it again when the starter quits again. If it starts again, change the starter.

The transmission downshifts hard somtimes when stopping and won't shift up from 2nd gear. If I stop the car, put it in park and start it again, the transmission shifts properly. What could be the problem.

check the transmission fluid level to begin with. if this is not the problem, try changing the transmission filter. should be a cheap and easy solution to your problem

Stalling and bucking!

Injectors, even if one is bad, the increase in resistance in the SFI system kills the other injectors too. When it starts to run bad, unplug injectors one at a time to see if it runs better.
