Question about 1998 Honda Civic

2 Answers

1998 honda civic DX 5-speed w/ 240K miles, lost power & stalled after 15 miles heading home from work. Would crank, but not light. Towed home, replaced ignition module, d cap & rotor, still wouldn't start. Cleaned & re-gapped plugs (very little wear). Sprayed Gumout into open throttle body, engine cranked & ran nicely until Gumout burned off. (!) Repeated several times to verify, but still would not stay running, so assume fuel delivery issue. Fuel pump whirs & shuts off after 2 seconds, fuel present @ banjo bolt on filter. All applicable fuses test good. Suggestions for next step(s)?

The fuel pump was replaced 2 years ago, whirs on key ON and goes thru the 2-second pre-start ritual, so I assume the relay is operational. The filter (also previously replaced) had pressure & leaked when the banjo bolt was loosened, so I figured fuel was at least getting to the injector rail.

Replaced distributor, checked grounds. Removed fuel line from rail & cranked engine. Fuel pumped out into cup, so pressure present @ fuel rail. ALso replaced fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, & fuel filter previously. Problem still occurs.

Injector pulses depend on signals from the cam and crank sensors. Test those

You may need to inspect the fuel filter if it needs replacing. As for the fuel pump, if ever it is faulty, I advise to have it checked when directly connected to the battery and see if it runs. If it does not it may be the relay that is faulty or just the wiring.

Fuel pump fuse is good. didn't drop the tank. did tune up day before . cap, rotor, plugs . drove 15 -20 miles then died. still sound like ignition switch?

ok slow down, it stalls, that is all we need, no need guess.
and tune up don, but you skipped the fuel filter? and air filter,?

1: lost 12vdc to EFI system. lost elect. power. easy to test , easy to see. you can attach a DMM set to 12v at the IGN output wire.
and see if it drops to zero as engine dies. sure can.

2: you could , check for spark at death, got spark
and work that path if spark fails.
3: lost fueling, (sparks soaked in fuel x 4? ) then its flooding
if dry spark tips x4 then lost fueling , so try test fuel.

you failed to say, is this a hard fail , i t dont run now.
or is always random... just a lil hint.
assuming power is hot at all EFI fuses.
then fails only 3 ways,
1: lost compression hot (if solid lifters, lash never set)
2: lost spark'
3: lost fuel or flooding.

if flooding use WOT, in this super secret mode works, Wide open throttle cranking, clears floods. (ecu cuts all fuel in this mode)

When I start my 2007 Honda Civic Coupe it stalls when I release the clutch. It also stalls when it is in neutral and I release the clutch. No other apparent problems.

moving only or parked.

the ECU, does its best to prevent stalls, in fact it can raise the
idle speed, to stop just that. this is ISC actions. idle speed controls.
if the car love to stall, coming to a traffic light , this is usually
the EGR sticking wide open. (it closes just before you stop)
you can save the stall with a fast right foot
easy? ISC sticking
harder, EGR sticking
impossible. (lost fueling or lost spark or bad DC power to EFI)
the FSM shows the 50k service to clean the EGR main valve.
it must not be sticky. the isc is the same deal, they too can gum up. 1998 , easy.
