Question about Saturn L-Series

Open Question

I need to replace the rear shocks and springs on a 2001 Saturn L200. The shock on the driver side came off of the spring mount resulting in the rear car sagging and at times the tire hitting the well. How do I remove the old shock and spring and replace it with a new set?

if they are wet with oil the seal is leaking

My 1994 Vanden Plas makes the same noise. I know I need rear shocks. You do also!! Have the rear shocks replaced. Bilstein part number B46 1858 or Koni part  number 30 1377. Actually the Bilstein is the better shock and less expensive.

Turns out that after 26 years and 233 thousand miles, the original strut gave up the ghost: Rust! I took the shock strut assembly out of a 'spare parts' Honda Accord I keep and replaced the broken one in the Honda I am now driving. Mechanically the car is still excellent, but the car is destined to dissolve around me! To remove the whole assembly required taking out one 14mm bolt at the bottom and three 12mm bolts at the top, some WD 40, several pieces of wood for leverage and a heavy mallet.. Since there is a heavy duty coil spring involved, one should take out the bottom bolt first and lift the bottom of the strut free from its position, ( this is where I used a long 2x4 and another piece of wood as the fulcrum point to pry the strut upward) Then undo the top 3 bolts and the whole unit falls out. You will also need to detach the brake fluid line that uses the strut itself as an anchor. The easiest way is to take the line off from the back of the brake drum housing ( 9mm nut) and remove the horseshoe clip and push the curved metal brake line through the small hole where the line is anchored to the strut. Use care as you will need to reattach the brake line again after installing the next shock strut. (Coil spring compression tool required) Needless to say, you will need to jack the car up and remove the rear tire first to access the whole thing.

You have to remove them - that "block" is the upper strut-to-body mounting section and serves as the upper seat for the spring as well as the anchor for the top of the strut. You need to take those four 17mm bolts out, as well as the rear upper sway bar bolt, the upper control arm bolt (at the top of the hub), and the bottom bolt on the strut, where it goes through the lower control arm. You'll then have to compress the spring enough to take the bolt out of the "block" (it goes through sideways, and I believe is 19mm on the bolt head as well as the nut). At this point, you can slide the spring/strut out of the block, decompress the spring, pull out the strut, and install a new spring over the strut. Recompress enough to get the top of the strut visible through the anchor bolt hole in the block, rebolt it, decompress the spring, and reinstall the assembly in the car. Usually when you go to reinstall it, the bottom of the strut is not angled quite right once the top four 17mm bolts are back in and the block is secured to the body. I put a large screwdriver through the lower strut bolt hole at the bottom of the strut and use that to turn it, or I grab the weld near the bottom of the strut with large ChanneLock pliers and turn it until it's aligned with the control arm properly. Once it is, put the lower bolt back in, rebolt the control arm and sway bar, and you're good to go.

Note - this job will not affect alignment specs - you don't remove any bolts used in aligning the car, so that's not a concern when doing this repair.

The shocks in the rear just unbolt top and bottom, disconnect the air line and replace them.

Struts are used in the front. You'll need to remove them and then have a spring compressor to change the struts. An alignment check is recommended after the struts are replaced.

shocks are easy my friend. make sure you have shocks in the front not struts. a strut will have a spring around the shock with a large steel plate holding the spring to the strut. first off. the car does not have to be lifted to change the rear and if you have shocks on the front as well. just simply remove the lower and upper mounting hardware then change. i can not say enough make sure you have shocks in the front and not struts. struts are a pain and can be very dangerous to replace if you dont have the correct equipment

REMOVE REAR SEAT AND PACKAGE SHELF TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE UPPER SHOCK ATTACHING NUTS.REMOVE UPPER ATTACHING NUTS. RAISE VECHICLE REMOVE REAR WHEEL AND SUPPORT THE LOWER CONTROL ARM WITH A JACK REMOVE LOWER SHOCK ABSORBER MOUNTING BOLT. REMOVE SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY FROM THE VECHICLE. COMPRESS THE COIL SPRING WITH THE PROPER SPRING COMPRESSOR TOOL. REMOVE CENTER RETAINING NUT HOLDING THE UPPER MOUNTING INSULATOR. SLOWLY DECOMPRESS THE COIL SPRING.REMOVE THE MOUNTING INSULATOR AND THE COIL SPRING. REMOVE THE COIL SPRING. TO INSTALL COMPRESSED COIL SPRING ONTO THE STRUT ASSEMBLY. Are struts on the front or back of this car?


The struts model (MacPherson Strut),are both in front and back of this car.

Of course this is only the cartridge, you have to transfer the spring, and the top mount of the existing strut. You need a pair of coil spring compressor to do the job. The basic procedure to replace a strut is:
Remove the top nuts that secure the strut assembly to the frame mount inside the engine compartment. Do not remove the center nut.
Mark the lower strut mounting location on the hub for installation reference. The alignment will be close if the new strut is installed in the same position.
Remove the bolts that hold the strut assembly to the hub.
Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
Mark the top mount for installation reference. Using a side mounted spring compressor, compress the spring and remove the top nut and retaining washer. Pull strut assembly out from the bottom of spring.
Slide the new strut assembly up into the spring and reposition the top mount onto the spring in the same position that it was removed. Install the retaining washer and top nut.
Tighten the top nut to the manufacturer's specifications and carefully remove the spring compressor.
Place the strut assembly back into the vehicle.

How to change Front shocks on a jetta


You'll need to unbolt the top of the strut and the bottom of the strut at the steering knuckle. You'll need a spring compressor to compress the spring before seperating the strut from the strut mount and spring. You may want to replace the strut mount also. MAKE SURE THE SPRING IS COMPRESSED ENOUGH BEFORE REMOVING THE TOP STRUT MOUNT!!!!

you could have bad mounting bushings for the struts or it could be other bushings in the rear axle tracking arms. in order to find out you have to jack the vehicle up.(use jack stands to support the vehicle for safety) check all the struts and shocks and any componant that has to do with keeping the wheels on the ground . that is what the strut/shock is for. check the coils spring to make sure they are not loose. the coils spring keeps the body from bottomning out... hope this helps..........please rate.

This is a dangerous job if you do not have the proper equipment for compressing the spring that is around the rear shock. I do not recomend performing this job without the proper equipment. Unloading the spring without it compressed can cuase injury.

If you have the proper equipment this is how you do it.

REMOVAL - SHOCK ASSEMBLY NOTE: Access for the nuts attaching the rear shock assembly upper mount to the vehicle is through the inside of the trunk.
  1. Roll back carpeting on top of the rear shock tower to access shock mounting nuts.
  2. Remove plastic cover from the top of the shock assembly.
  3. Remove 2 nuts attaching the shock assembly upper mount/spring seat to the shock tower.
  4. Raise vehicle on jackstands or centered on a frame contact type hoist.
  5. Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly from the vehicle.
  6. Remove two fasteners holding the splash shield to the shock assembly upper mount.
  7. Remove bolt attaching shock absorber to rear knuckle
  8. Remove the shock absorber from the rear knuckle first when removing the shock absorber from vehicle by pushing down on the rear suspension.
  9. Move shock assembly downward and tilt top of shock outward, then remove shock assembly from vehicle through top of wheel opening.
