Question about Toyota Highlander

1 Answer

Our 2008 Toyota Highlander's security alarm goes off often anywhere from 10 minutes to 3 hours after locking the car. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. It stops as we open a door but sometimes will go off again and sometimes not. One dealership in Florida told us it wasn't possible. Very frustrating and annoying to us and others.

I thnk it is finally fixed. Putting the car on their electrical check system revealed nothing. Lo and behold there is a TBS from Toyota that suggests the hood sensors might need replacing. It worked. Why couldn't have mentioned that in the first place.

You need to have the door switches checked, sounds like one of them is going bad, or it might be the hood pin, their should be a code in the system that will tell you what caused the system to go off, take the car to auto zone and have them pull the BCM codes and then get back with me and i can look up the codes for you.

Are you sure you have battery polarity correct? Positive is usually red, negative and connection to frame is usually green. Car may be smart enough to complain about this kind of thing. The electronics would get fried if installed improperly. Double check. Check Owner's manual, troubleshooting. Google your problem. Other owners may have had similar problems.

Sometimes a computer reset can clear things up. Try disconnecting the battery overnight. When running the car for the first time after, make sure lights and a/c are off for the first 5-10 minutes or so while it idles and relearns the idle fuel mixture. This clears all the learned functions in the computer so it goes back through the relearn functions.

Have the dealer keep the car and run a scan test on the security system while this alarm issue is occurring, then they can pinpoint the cause of the false activation of the system. That problem will likely be one of the door latch sensors is failing.

Alarm goes off intermmitantly when the Disco TDI 300, 1997

First check your battery and connections. There are two alarm units , your dealer will be able to read the fault codes and advise you on what to do.I don't think it's wise to expose the security of your vehicle on line.
