The ignition key cannot be moved to the start position. I used the key from my Lexus ES 330 to start my wife's RX. Now the keys for her RX will not move to the "start" position. When I get in the car and put the key in the ignition, the steering wheel moves to its memory position, but I can't move it to start the car. This has happened twice before and both times the RX started, the first time after waiting about an hour, the second not until after two days. The steering wheel is notunder any pressure--I've wiggled it every time I've tried to start the car.

Yes, I used the wrong key, as I said in my first comment. I used the key for my Lexus ES 33 in her RX 330--this is the third time in about five years. The shifter is in park and I cannot get it out of park--that's the problem. I can insert the proper key, but I cannot make the key move out of park.

The key will not turn at all

  • mstran227 Apr 07, 2011

I cannot turn the key on.

  • mstran227 Apr 07, 2011

Yes, as I said in two replies now. I used the key from my 2004 ES 330 to try to start my wife's 2004 RX 330. This is the third time this has happened in the last few years. I know the car has an anti-theft system, but that shouldn't stop the right key from moving at all. I have tried th shifter about a couple dozen times and I can only insert the key in the ignition but not move it. I know the car recognizes the correct key because the steering wheel automatically returns to its memory position when I insert the key.

Got it at last. Two days of spraying lock lubricant and moving the key in and out finally did it. I guess the wrong key moved the tumblers into different positions that they hadn't been in before and they stuck there. Thanks for your help.

Did you check the brake lights are they working and did you try using the shift lock override button to get the shifter to move out of park then put it back in park and retry the key? In some cases this helped.-------- But if the problem is same then, try the keys in the doors also. Are the doors getting open/ close by that same key.---

If you have a spare key , try with another key and check. But if the problem is same with other key too, then Most likely a tumbler came loose or stuck in the ignition.

You can try spraying some wd-40 in the ignition cylinder to see if this will allow the key to twist/turn and free up the tumblers.------- Other thing you can try is just hammer (softly tap) the tip inside the cylinder lock with a screwdriver and hammer. But do it gently.Do it 3-4 times then check.Do it again 3-4 times then check. In one or two tries, it will start mostly, if its ignition switch jam inside. Hammer and Screwdriver technique: A flat blade screwdriver - similar size to the key insert in the key slot and given a few gentle hammer taps. But if that is not releasing the internal ignition jam, then, instead of going to dealer I suggest you get a locksmith to try to remove the ignition switch and unjam it.----------------

But if that is also not helping then its ignition cylinder problem.A new ignition cylinder has to be installed.

--------

This should help.Keep updated.Thanks.Helpmech.

first things first did you use the wrong key to try to start this car? also make sure the shifter is in park you might try to start it in neutral.

i ask about the wrong key because the car is equipped with a anti theft immobilizer, if you put the wrong key in the ignition it will set off the anti theft system, this should not keep the key from turning but will not let the engine start.

try the shifter and get back with me.

if you can turn the key on then you should be able to get the car out of park.

you are going to have to replace the key and tumbler assembly, when you inserted the wrong key tou must have bent or broken one of the tumblers in the key lock, and by the way you should have put in your post that the key will not turn at all not that it would not turn to the start postion, your post was very coufusing, that is why i was asking all the questions so i couled figure out what you were trying to say, i hope you beter luck with your next expert, i maybe with the questions i have asked the next expert has something to work with.

How do you replace a lost key for a lexus rx 330

You need to bring the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) to a Lexus dealer, where they will check that against a stolen car database, and ensure you receive the correct key. This key usually has an internal transponder-computer chip to match the vehicle. Not inexpensive but there's pretty much no way around this.

Hope this helps.

Error 04 CD player

Hey...it's easy to fix. Open the fuse box under the hood. Find the audio fuse. Pull it out for 10-15 minutes to reset the cdplayer. Plug it back in and problem solved. If it still does not work just change the fuse. I had that problem and had to search high and low for a solution and found it
on some web site. IT WORKED...will save you $800 that Lexus charges to do the same thing.
