Hard brake pedal

check your vacuum line to your brake booster if it is fine, then get your brake fluid tested, believe it or not it does go bad, if it is fine, then you have two choices, live with it or replace your brake booster.

Brake pedal hard

Hi P, The most usual cause of the brake pedal action becoming hard is a defective return seal in the brake master cylinder. When the brakes are depressed fluid is pushed into the wheel cylinders, activating the brake pads and shoes. After a few operations of the braking system the fluid fails to return to the master cylinder and with each further action the brakes become tighter. After the vehicle stands for some time the pressure gradually releases and frees the brakes. Have the brake master cylinder checked. It's good policy to replace the brake fluid once or twice a year as part of the major service. Regards John

1993 buick lesabre changed the front rotars and pads and now the cars brake pedal is so hard to push down to get car to stop. Mechanic has checked both the front and back brakes and they are fine. T

I would jack up a front wheel and see if pushing on the pedal with the engine running will stop the wheel from turning.
You need to know if the pressure is reaching the wheels, or if the pads and rotors are too slick to stop the car.
Usually if the pedal is hard, the booster is not working or the brakes are glazed.
Can you stop the car with the parking brake ? That only uses the rear brakes.
You may need a second opinion from a different shop.

When coming to a stop, the brakes work fine until I get almost stopped, then the pedal will push down further and brakes will come on hard, and stop vehicle hard, what could be the problem?

Sounds like your master cylinder is bad on your brake system. If you are stopped in your driveway(not on the street) leave the vehicle in park. Start the car and place your foot on the brake with light pressure and keep this pressure on the pedal. If the pedal continues to drop slowly to the floorboard your master cylinder is leaking past the primary piston in the master cylinder. If this is the case have this repaired immediately. Your brakes could just all of a sudden not be there the next time you apply them when you need to stop.

Brake booster appears not to be working properly. brakes work ok for 1 or 2 apps then pedal gets hard. cannot hear any vacume leaks. the car does have a vacume switch in the booster

the booster is the problem, or a hole or leak in vacuum line to booster check the check valve also ! from manifold. heres the symtoms of a bad brake booster. primary symtom is a hard pedal on application, to test booster. pump brakes several times with engine off. to deplete stored vacuum. turn on engine with pushing slightly on brake pedal. you should feel the pedal fade away abit and then become firm. but not hard. if you feel nothing at pedal when engine starts, brake booster is not working! check the vacuum lines first!!

well, a hard firm pedal, usually indicates a bad brake booster or a vacuum leak to booster or the vacuum check valve, on booster. TO TEST BRAKE BOOSTER; pump brakes several times with engine off to deplete stored vacuum. turn on engine with pushing slightly on pedal. you should feel the pedal fade away a bit and then become firm, but not hard. if you feel nothing at the pedal when engine starts the booster is at fault. good-luck !!
