Question about 1985 Honda Accord

1 Answer

My 1985 Honda Accord with a manual transmission and carburetor was sitting for over a year. When I went to start it up, it started fine but won't idle. I can hold it at around 1500 rpm but when I let off the accelerator it chugs at about 500 rpm then stops. I found and replaced a few questionable vacuum hoses but the problem still exists.

Hi there ftippin! Have you drained and replaced the old fuel in the tank? Gasoline only has about six months time that you can use it be for it goes bad, it kind of turns into kerosene or paint thinner. Some things that need to be done to a car that sits for any extended period of time is,

  1. Drain old fuel replace with new
  2. Clean fuel system by running new gas through
  3. Full tune up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, oil change)
  4. You also may need to clean and adjust the carburator
  5. Replace fuel filter
  6. Replace air filter
If you do these things your car will fire right up. Usually the main thing keeping it from running properly is the bad fuel. The old stuff wont burn properly and the tank can get corroded causing deposits to clog thge lines.

Good luck!

1996 5 speed honda accord. sat for a year. put in new battery. everything lights up, but car wont start. never had previous problem.

Are you saying the car turns over (cranks) but it does not start? Or, the car is Not turning over?
If it is cranking over but not starting, and it ran fine before sitting for the year, it may be water/moisture in the gas. Try some dry gas, and/or Carb-fuel injection cleaner in your gas tank.

94 honda accord ''D4'' gear shift shift selector blinks

Theres a transmission cooling sensor and somtimes the wire comes loose from other repairs being done around it. or its just out. its on the left side sitting on the tranny. THATS WHY your d4 light is blinking

Restoring an 85 Honda accord

I have experienced problems w/ cars that have sat unused for some time, Here's what to expect: The gas can be a major problem. Gas can go bad after several months, although I have had vehicles sit for a year, and they started and ran fine, hopefully you will have the same luck that I did. If it goes bad, it gets gummy, and clogs up the carb or injectors. Next thing to consider is the brake system. Fluid should probably be flushed throughout the entire system. It's common for brakes to 'drag' after sitting for long periods, especially if brake fluid hasn't been changed in a long time. You may find that brake calipers or brake cylinders are seized up and need to be replaced/rebuilt. Other than that, change the oil and filter, also the air filter, (check for mouse nests in the air filter ) and once it's up and running, change trans fluid (is it auto or stick?). 60k, WOW, what a car! Good luck! Curt

'91 Honda Accord LX transmission light on.

You say "standard transmission?" Do you mean "standard" as in "manual/5 spd./'stick-shift'?" transmission?

Either way, if you replaced the alternator belt and the battery light went away and the car doesn't sputter or stop, then it's the "speed sensor" on the transmission itself. The car will still drive, but the speedometer cannot read how fast the car is going (in RPM's as well).
