Question about 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser

1 Answer

Since 2007 we have had some air condition troubles with our 2002 PT Cruiser. we've had 3 condensers (with new dyers each time, last 5/2010) & a new evaporator core in 7/2010. $2700+ later they say we need a new compressor another $850. Blue book on the car is maybe $2000-$4000 but the car has only 51,000 miles on it and I love it. I don't know what to do now. The condenser has gone every summer and I worry if I fix the compressor I'll still have to deal with the condenser again. Help???

While the original Chrysler parts aren't of the highest quality, it seems to be short time between failures. If this was repaired at a Chysler Dealer, then you may be able to have them cover some or all the costs. If the work's been at a independent shop, then the parts may have been of poorer quailty. I would look at this real hard before you pay to have it repaired again at the same shop.

Thank you so much for your response. After the warranty expired we used a local shop which we have always found very trustworthy and we've never had any problems with them with any of our cars or kids cars until now. I now think that they should have told me that since the repair took 5 hours of labor that it might make sense to replace the other parts at the same time (frankly I take the blame for not educating myself that there were a lot of other parts that make the air conditioner work) and as it turns out we'd have saved a lot of money (all labor charges). The fact that the first condenser was bad was bad luck & then I read that the evaporator core should have been replaced with the dryer or the compressor goes bad...

Take it in & have it scanned, may only be a faulty solenoid or even brake switch may cause code & symptoms. Sooner you get it in, the cheaper it will probably be to repair it

I would check your wire harness. The starter is close to where you would be working on the radiator. I have not had the pleasure to put one in but i know its a tight squeez in there.

2002 pt cruiser overheating was told i need a new raditor and thermostat for 1 grand sounds fishy

Flush rad & change coolant & thermostat. Check operation of rad fan, & make sure it is coming on when engine reaches normal operating temperature. Be sure to bleed air out good when refilling rad/cooling system. Start engine & turn heater on when refilling & let rad fan come on & off at least 2 or 3 times before putting cap back on rad, and refill rad as needed as you do this. then fill return bottle to proper level & see what happens.

Were is the air bleed valve for the cooling system on a 2002 pt cruiser

Usually on or near thermostat housing, but if you can't locate it, leaving rad cap off & heater on & rev engine slightly, once in a while, and wait until rad fan comes on & off 2 or 3 times & you should be good. Top up, install cap, top up bottle.

Overheating problems

The first thing that I would check would be the resistance of the engine coolant temperature sensor, This is the sensor that tells the computer how hot the engine is and allows the fan to kick on when the temperature reaches a certain threshold.
