As the crank shaft turns raising and lowering the pistons the Cam shaft turns along with it. The Cam shaft has raised lobs the push the rocker (kind of like a Sea Saw) which in turn pushes the lifter down. This opens and closes the valves. All of this is to set up the right conditions for the piston to deliver a power stroke. When the rocker or lifters become warn gaps between the rocker and the lifter become larger. The tapping noise comes from the lifter making contact with the lifter as it closes the small gap that was created from the wear. There are also other reasons for lifter notice as well. Not changing the oil can cause built up of sludge that can result in a lifter collapsing causing noise.

You should also be aware that the 2000 Buick Century with the 3.1 L engine was known for a condition called "piston slap". This was built into the design of the engine and can easily be confused with lifters tapping. If what is being heard is piston slap you should only here it when the engine is first started and it would go away when the engine warms up.

I hope this helped. God Bless.

More specific does that mean engine about to go is it something that can be fixed not high in price

If this issue is truly coming from the lifter it is an indicator of high mileage or not changing the oil. A valve adjustment could help. Also adding Rislone or Sea Foam to the oil for oil change could help. If it progressively gets worse it can be a costly repair. The labor is what the most costly part is.

I have a 2000 Buick Century limited. While driving or turning either direction I can hear grinding. When making slow sharp turns either way can feel a thumping. What would it be?

Wheel bearing would be my guess , without hearing the noise ! CV joints make a clicking sound when turning , when bad ! Have it checked by a qualified repair shop before your wheel falls off .

You would hear a loud ticking sound up top
.The lifters would be making a bad topping sound up top. Take it down to the rockers and you would hear the cylinder that makes the noise.and see.

You need to change oil or the oil is low. Use 5w20 motorcraft synthetic blend and a purolator filter.

We have a 2000 Buick Century Limited that has a ticking in the motor we where told this was normal because the pistons where to big for this engine in Buick that year is this true Is the motor safe. It is...

I always wonder why some mechanics just cant say they dont know.I drive a 2001 century every day with 93,000 miles on it.It developed a ticking noise at 80,000 that i diagnosed as a lifter noise.I change my own oil and I put a quart of auto trans fluid in the engine oil and drove it for a week before i changed the oil and the noise went away and stayed gone. This is a trick I learned from my dad who is also a mechanic and shop owner for 35 years.Give it a try and let me know.Good luck.

Is it normal to squeeze the upper radiator hose and it make a sucking noise in the resivioir? on a 2000 Buick Century Custom?

Yes it is, but don't be afraid to check the coolant level, Just top off the radiator and bring the expansion tank up to the full mark. It will balance itself off. Hope this helps.
