Sir: i have this problem with my 1992 subaru svx lsl. when i am driving the car it sometimes shuts off. no warning and no indication. the fuel pump and the fuel filter are new. a parts manager at a subaru dealer in MASS. told me it may be the fuel control modulator under the rear deck by the rear speakers. take off the covering to see it. it may be the yellow wire ground. or it may be the fuel pump relay to the right of the steering column under the dash. dave barcorpinc@aol.com

Instead of cleaning the mass airflow sensor, replace it with a new one, not from salvage yard, from maybe auto zone. The original one that came with the car is most likely defective, after so many miles and years of useage.

If the engine cuts-out while driving, does it start back up after sitting a few minutes? The problem will be spark or fuel. If the engine starts back up and dies unexpectedly on occasion, it is more likely something failing: 1) fuel pump 2) Mass Airflow Sensor

If the SVX has over 125K miles, it probably the fuel pump. To check the MAS, cut away silicone sealant on square plastic circuitry cover and inspect metal for discoloration from previous hot spots.

Does it experience any symptoms before it dies, does it die while idle or while moving?

Mine dies as well with little to no warning, sometimes the engine feels weak before it dies but not always. It dies while moving, tends to be more in town then highway

03 Nissan Altima showing codes P0304,P0102,P0154,P0113 what are they and how do i repair the problems.

Hi Chris.

p0304 = Number 4 Cylinder Misfire Detected

Faulty spark plug 4
Clogged or faulty fuel injector 4
Faulty ignition coil 4
Fuel injector 4 harness is open or shorted
Fuel injector 4 circuit poor electrical connection
Ignition coil 4 harness is open or shorted
Ignition coil 4 circuit poor electrical connection
Insufficient cylinder 4 compression
Incorrect fuel pressure
Intake air leak

The P0304 code means that the cylinder 4 is misfiring or is randomly misfiring. Start by checking for intake leaks an if no leaks are found the next step is to replace the spark plugs on cylinder 4.

p0102 = Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Low Input

Faulty mass air flow sensor
Intake air leaks
Dirty mass air flow sensor
Dirty mass air filter
Mass air flow sensor harness is open or shorted
Mass air flow sensor circuit poor electrical connection

Before replacing the mass air flow sensor, try replacing the air filter and cleaning the air flow sensor with low compress air or mass air flow sensor cleaner.
Reset code and drive vehicle.
If the code comes back, it may be necessary to replaced the mass air flow sensor.

p0154 = O2 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected Sensor 1 Bank 2

Faulty Front Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 2
Front Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 2 harness is open or shorted
Front Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 2 circuit poor electrical connection
Inappropriate fuel pressure
Faulty fuel injectors
Intake air leaks may be faulty
Exhaust gas leaks

Replacing the Front Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 2 usually takes care of the problem.

p0113 = Intake Air Temperature Sensor Circuit High

Faulty Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor
Dirty air filter
Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor harness is open or shorted
Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor circuit poor electrical connection

The Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor is built into mass air flow sensor or in some vehicles mounted to the air filter duct housing. The sensor detects intake air temperature and transmits a signal to the Engine Control Module (ECM).The temperature sensing unit uses a thermistor which is sensitive to the change in temperature. Electrical resistance of the thermistor decreases in response to the temperature rise. The Intake Air Temperature signal is used as an input for various systems in the vehicle.

Hope this helps

My 2003 Astro van has been running fine the I got gasmonday night and as I pulled out the gas station it spit and sputtered like I got bad gas or trash in filter, then it started working fine.

Mass air flow sensor maybe drity or going bad . Ever had it replaced ? Have you replaced the air filter lately ? Video's on youtube showing how to clean mass air flow sensor , you would have to buy a can of mass air flow sensor cleaner . Also while your at it clean the throttle plate , again there are videos on youtube . How did you check fuel pump ? To do it right you would need to hook up a pressure gauge . Also check flow .Videos on youtube .Has the check engine light come on ? Also you mite try some fuel injector cleaner and or dry gas for moisture in the fuel !

My 1996 sentra is bucking and kicking while driving and dies when idling at lights. I have replaced air, fuel filters as well as wire and plugs. Check engine light does not come on. Fuel economy goes from...

idle control valve will need cleaning, also the mass air flow as well ( mas air flow cleaner only recommended) and the air temp sensor. may need cleaning or replacing, it could also be the spark plugs or leads. it could also need the egr cleaning as well, and sometimes it can be from were you get your fuel. if the garage you get your fuel from when its rain and you fill up and then have problems there could be water in the fuel as some garages don't know that ground water is getting into the tanks under ground.

Engine runs great, everything seems to work but since buying it yesterdday it has just died going down the road 3 different times, then sometimes starts right up and other times it needs to sit a minute...

hi if the check engine light comes on i would start by changing fuel filter or fuel pump, however sometimes sensors dont trigger the check engine light and if it doesnt come on i would pull out the cam and crank sensors and clean them as they maybe dirty and causing the spark to die randomly

Sometimes my 95 subaru legacy won't start. It sounds right just doesn't start when it finally starts if you hit the gas it dies no noises just dead.I replaced the fuel pump,o2 censor, not the problem...

I would check air flow sensor(MAF).
Just had Subaru with the same problem , at times it was hard to start , and when it finaly starts no power, rough idle , no acceleration.
I belive your car is OBD I , so you can try to disconnect air mass sensor while it's running , and see if it's any better.

It starts runs then gets slughis and dies after about 20 min driven time also the mass air flow sensor needs a small gap for the car to run when i tightin it down the car dies why?

POSSIBLE CAT CONVERTER OR FUEL FILTER ISSUE, MAKE SURE THE MASS AIR SENSOR IS CLEAN,USE BRAKE OR CARB CLEANER,AND AIRFILTER IS CLEAN WITH NO BLOCKAGE IN AIR BOX. GOOD LUCK.

2000 Subaru Legacy will not start

If you find that the engine is dying at intersections and runs a rough and fluctuating idle at start up, and you also sometimes lose power even though the engine is running then it is probably your Air Flow Meter or sometimes reffered to as a Mass Airflow Sensor. Eventually, as the AFM deteriates further you will no longer be able to start the engine as the ECU can no longer get accurate flow readings to work out air fuel ratios and shuts it all down to stop damage occuring. 2 ways to fix, replace AFM or upgrade your ECU to one that is capable of running MAPs for air fuel ratio, rather than using a sensor. Hope this helps.
