Question about 1997 Honda Civic

1 Answer

97 civic ex auto with 40k miles. Under slow acceleration, upshifts are 'lazy' with engine speeding up for a few 'moments' before shift is completed. More brisk acceleration delivers better or normal shifting. Is there a particular issue or component with this car I should check first? Thanks for any expert advice. Jack

A '97 with only 40k ? Wow ! Sounds like a transmission issue. I would begin with changing the transmission fluid and filter. If that didn't work, I'd take it to a transmission shop because there isn't much you can do on your own with a transmission due to their inherent complexity.

I have a 2001 honda civic ex 1.7 liter, and when I have to brake suddenly the car idles down really low like its wanting to die. Is this the timing

I doubt it very much. The engine slowing down under brakes indicates that the gears are not down shifting in relation to the engine rpm and road speed. run fault codes and look for a TCM sensor problem

Sounds like a bad speed sensor. Perform an ODBII scan soon. ECU should delay upshift until coolant temp senses warm up. It will not work right unless a signal is present from speed sensor.
