This is a set of general instructions. Steps may vary depending on the specific vehicle you are working on.

1. Place fender covers over the fenders

2. Disconnect the battery ground cable

3. Disconnect and label the wiring harness connections to the alternator (Painters Masking tape works very well for labeling automotive wiring).

If you vehicle is equipped with the belt tensioner:

4. Insert a 3/8th " ratchet wrench or a serpentine belt tool in the square located on the tensioner

5. Put pressure on the tensioner toward the center of the engine and move the belt off the Alternator pulley.

6. Loosen the alternator Pivot bolt and the bolt that attaches the alternator to the adjustment arm

If you vehicle does not have a belt tensioner:

4. Loosen the alternator pivot bolt.

5. Remove the bolt that attaches the alternator to the adjustment arm.

6. Rotate the alternator to loosen the drive belt and disengage the belt from the pulley. Be careful that any spacers that are used in mounting are kept with their original bolts. This will make correct reinstallation much easier.

7. While supporting the alternator remove the pivot bolt.

8. Remove the alternator from the vehicle.

Depends on which engine you have most fords arnt to difficult and fairly basic. you should disconnect the battery first so you dont short out the wiring remove the drive belt disconnect the wiring from the back of the alternator remove the plug. now remove the bolts attachingthe alternator it can be difficult to wriggle it off its bottom mount a bit of gentle perswasion may be required put new alt and old alt side by side check that all connections are the same and bolt holes also the drive pulley if they are same thing then fitting is reversal of removal if it uses a serpintine type drive belt draw a map so you know how to put it back on

Is a fairly easy job. Without the type of car its hard to be specific. Basically what you have to do is remove the belt, unhhok the positive battery cable, take out the 3 to 5 bolts that hold it in place, unhook the wires from it, and then reverse the order.

Replacing alternator

And your question is? You have 2 alternatives. Do it yourself or pay a mechanic. An alternator change out is about the easiest thing to do yourself. If you decide to do it your self, get a Chilton?Haynes Manual that covers your make, model and year. This book is really handy for a lot of things. The best thing to do is take the bad alternator out according to book instructions and take it to local/preferred parts store. That way they can test it and give you the correct replacement. And it avoids the core charge. Take new alternator home and put it is reverse of removal.

My car was squeaking like a belt.then the battery light came on while drained the battery

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

Looks like that you have an alternator belt issue. It was squeaking for the belt is loosen. I strongy suggest that you tighthen it for the alternator to charge the battery. If the alternator belt looks worn then replace it for optimum performance.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Suggest replacing all the belts also. 1st belt, remove coolant reservoir. Loosen the pulley next to the res. then there is a tension bolt behind it. get under the car, the alternator is right there on the passenger side. possible under a small shield. Loosen all the bolts on the alternator, then there is a tentioner on the alternator. Loosen that, remove belt, then take out the rest of the bolts, along with the plug and the ground wire to the alternator. for the P/S belt, loosen the other pulley 14mm, and then the tention bolt is another 12mm.

Going down the road it seems my headlights will dim occassionally. Has done this long time, but getting worse.

It sounds like it's time for you to invest in a new alternator and battery. The voltage regulator in the alternator which calls for the battery's to be charged at 13.5 to 14.5 volts may be failing or one of the stator windings in the alternator has a break in it and will created the drop in voltage when the wire's loose contacts with each other. If the battery is older then 5 years, it's a good thin to replace it to, it's know for old battery's in GM cars and trucks to create problems on the alternator's. If there is an Auto Zone around your area, have then test the alternator for you and they will have the replacement part you need and can give you the step by step instructions for you to do the job your self with common tools in about 30min. Good luck

How to replace 83 honda accord alternator

The very first thing you need to do is disconnect the 12 volt battery source, remove the positve lead as well as the negative lead to be absolutely sure, you must be careful, I would wear safety glasses as well cause anytime you work around batteries there is a possibility of spark and ignition that can cause the gasses produced by a battery to explode sending battery acid into the air and on ones self.

Next locate the alternator adjustment bolts , wire leads connecting to the alt. mark those necessary wires so that you will be able to install them back into their proper place on the new alt. remove alternator belt and note conditon, often this is the best time to replace it with a new one. once you have all bolts loose thne you can lift the alternator from it's rest , take careful note of any spacers used on the pivot mount side of the alternator as well as any wire leads connected you could not see from above. replace in opposite mannor as removal... hope this helps..

Battery will not charge

Just to add some info to the other two posts regarding solving this problem. I am a PTC owner. If you opt to replace the alternator yourself, just keep in mind it's location. I changed mine alone, and it was quite challenging. Best to have a helper it you can.
