Question about Ford Windstar

1 Answer

Have a '95 Windstar. Was traveling about 45 mph today and the rpm gauge continued to stay where it was and the brakes barely stopped the car, while the engine continued to race as if still moving at 45 mph. Put it in neutral and engine still raced. Green light and put in drive and tires screeched and started running rough. Within a block, the rpm gauge went back to where it should be for the speed I was traveling. I am positive it was not a stuck accelerator pedal. Scary!

There is more to the throttle then just the pedal. The cable at the other end by the throttle body could have been stuck or the throttle position sensor had an issue.

When I'm driving I press the brake to stop and the steering wheel shakes. Please help

Usually happens at 60mph. You need a balancing job done, it would be strange if the brakes suddenly decided to act up at 45 mph every time. Doubt that ur problem is the brakes. Get balancing job dine first, only twenty. If problem continues THEN take ur car to a mechanic

Brake light and abs light is on

Red lite comes on at startup to ck. system. If amber lite stays on, ck. brake fluid level and see if emergency brake is partly up. This shows problem with anti lock system if it stays on, not main brake system. If all is ok with this but still stays on Have ABS system checked. Haynes repair manual, 95-2003 Windstar, all models.

Could be a head gasket issue, did all of the old plugs look similar in color?
I would try a leak down , or compression test, along with a coolant pressure test.

I don't think my 95 Grand Cherokee is shifting into overdrive all the time. Can you tell me what the RPMs should be for it running 65 MPH?

Depending on differential gearing, most run at about 21 hundred rpms @65. Overdrive usually shifts in at around 45mph. To see if it is engaged, while doing about 50, lightly tap the brake. That should momentarily disengage the od and the rpm's should increase for a moment. @45, you should notice the rpm drop when it engages initially.

2004 Jetta sedan, 1.8 TDI, about 38000 miles, manual transmission. Always use premium gas (91 octane or above) from name-brand stations. Last serviced in Oct 2010 -- oil change, new tires, new brakes...

You use premium gas in a TDI? Run that by me again? A TDI is a diesel engine car. What don't I understand here? I'm not being a smart __s but this just does not make sense. If you have put gasoline in a TDI, DO NOT DRIVE IT. Tow it to a dealer.

Top speed is 45 mph

this particular year and model has problems with the transmission module. before you go on a whim... make sure your van is shifting gears. when the module goes out it will stay in second gear and not shift to other gears. watch your rpm's to see if it shifts with your speed. if the rpm's dont drop and just continue to advance your transmission is not shifting. the best option if you are not a home mechanic is to take it and have a diagnostic done. there is also the possibility that your input or output sensors are also bad. which also controls when your vehicle shifts and the speed. another thing to look for is if any of the plugs have bare wires and are grounding out. i hope this gives you a place to start..........
