Question about 2004 Ford Expedition

We have a 2004 Ford Expedition when you turn right there is a noise coming from the wheel on the driver side. At first it was like a grinding noise so we changed the inner/outer tie rods. The noise continued so we changed the rotors. Now, the noise is not as loud but like a tum tum tum noise only when turning what can it be. We can't continue to put money in this truck times are tough right now.

There are several components that could cause noise from the front when turning. The components to be concerned about are, Wheel bearings, Ball Joints, Tie rod Ends, CV joints and brake rotors.

Wheel Barrings:

Jack the car up under the control arm until the wheel is off the ground about 3 inches. Slide a pry bar under the tire and place the other hand on the top of the tire. As you lift and lower the pry bar fell for loose movement in the tire. If there is such movement you have a bad wheel bearing.

On your vehicle this is a sealed Hub.

Ball Joint:

Repeat the test above and watch the upper and lower ball joints for movement. Is there is movement replace the bad ball joint.

Tie Rod ends:

You have changed the inner and outer tie rod ends so you are probably covered there.

CV joint:

The Joint is housed in a rubber boot. If you can feel the joint inside the boot you can turn the tire forward and back and feel for play in the joint. If you are not able to feel the play you can loosen the clamp on the boot and push the boot out of the way. Then repeat the test.

Brake Rotors.

You have already changed the rotors so this is not likely the issue.

My 2002 ford expadition is still making the grinding whoop whoop noise, I took it to a machanic and they said it was the roter or brakes or ball joints, so I got all replaced on both sides and it is still...


If the noise only happens when you are moving, and it changes with the speed of the truck, its something that is connected to the wheels.
Road speed does not affect suspension noises like ball joints and spindles.
So it would be something like the brakes, axle joints or bearings, or something in the differential where the axles come together.
If the truck is 4wd you have front hub bearings behind the brake rotors, and regular bearings if it is 2wd.

Rear wheel bearings??


Yes. It could absolutely be wheel bearings gone bad. Any time a wheel wiggles more than a little bit that is the first place to check on the rear of the vehicle.

I do think the same way. If the pads look flat and not so worn have the rotor turned to eliminate the squeaksyou are encountering

Driver side wheel stub removed


You can try, but it likely won't work. Cut the stud in half, then it will come out. As far as the new one, You will have to grind the end of it a little bit. It's either that or remove the hub assembly. When you grind it, You grind a flat edge on the splined end.

04 cavalier makes grinding noise in front end turn the wheel to the right grinding gets worse turn the wheel to the left grinding stops. it sounds worse at 40mph and above. what would cause this?


3 things to check:
Worn disc brake pads, grinding against the rotor.
Wheel bearing
cv joint.
You posted grinding gets worse turning to the right, the problem is the driver side wheel, but it would be best to have both wheeles checked.
