Screeching sound when shifting from stop to fist gear

I have a 2002 mini cooper s that has about 81K mi. for the past 2 months i started hearing a screeching sound when i start shifting into first gear. i notice that this usually occurs when the first time i get in the car to drive and before it gets well into normal operating temperature. its a very slight screeching sound that only happens when shifting to first gear from stop.i have taken to a shop but so far they can't figure it out.

Sounds like the first gear syncro is going out you could have the trans rebuilt or the most expensive route is to replace the trans all together.

Mini Cooper Transmission Relearn Procedure

If the gear selection display on your Mini Cooper has an x before the gear selected,

like xP or xD or xR, then you need to run this procedure.

The usual cause of this is a dead or disconnected battery for a long period of time.

First make sure you have a good battery that will hold a charge or fix the charging

system problem.

Get the car someplace where you will be able to drive for a mile or two without

interruption on a fairly level road.

Follow ALL steps and don't skip anything.

Clutch Adaptation

1. Begin with a cold engine and start the car. Shift to N for 10 seconds, then shift

to D for 10 seconds.
Shift to P. Display says xP.

2. Repeat the following ten times. Shift to N for 3 seconds, then shift to D for 3

seconds.
Shift to P. Display says xP.

3. Repeat the following ten times. Shift to N for 3 seconds, then shift to R for 3

seconds.
Shift to P. Display says xP.

Step-up Ratio Adaptation

1. Accelerate vehicle to a speed greater than 80 km/h. Don't be afraid to go above

the redline on the tach for a few seconds. At this point the car may buck and snort

a little as it tries to get into a higher ratio. As soon as it settles into a higher

gear and the revs are above 4500, rpm let off the accelerator quickly. Don

The car will not go over 10 mi/ph ? the trans will not shift out of first gear - CVT?

Is the check engine lite on? If it is have the vehicle scanned for codes. Sounds like the Transmission control module not responding to anything.

MINI COOPER 2002, 25.00 MILES. ANY OF THE WINDOWS WORKS

With ignition switch on and engine off activate a window switch... listen for a clicking noise. if there is no noise then start checking fuses and relays. The fuse panel in on the left of the drivers legs. open it up it is well marked and in it you will find a handy fuse puller and spare fuses if they're needed. If you hear the clicking sound then try the Mini cooper Thump. Apply it to the doors midway between the large and small speakers (It may take two or three solid thumps) re-apply as needed

Gear stick

Mini's have had problems in the past with the shift cables coming off or breaking. No worries: the only danger is that you will be stuck in the gear you where in when the cables break. No damage to the car will occur. You should check out the recall notices. Good luck
