Question about 2003 GMC Sierra 1500

2 Answers

I was backing out of my drivewqay when i felt a catching like a rearend binding up. i went from drive to reverse and it continued for a while then i was able to get it into the garage. i jacked up the rearend and spin the tires and got nothing. i started turning the driveline and nothing. then i started turning the driveline the opisite way and it would lock. i turned it back the other way and it turned freely. i kept doing this and listened to the rearend and nothing. i moved to the tranny and transfer case and started hearing clanging and loose sounding gears or something to that sort. i had fluid in the tranny and no leaks in the transfer case area. i pulled out onto the road and in first gear i would hear metal rubbing sound until it went to second gear. there was no funny sound but rather a normal sounding truck. just like it had always sounded for the 182k i had drove it. it shifted through the gears fine and goes into reverse and drive just fine. but first gear sounds terrible. i have been told about a shell in the tranny that might have broke. i would love a simple fix since money is a bit of a problem right now but i fear that it could be the start of some major problems.this is the first problem i have ever had with this transmission since i have owned it. i also checked the brakes and the look great. thanks.

Sorry to tell you this really but there is not cheap fix. It needs a tranny shop and at minium will need a few gears and probably a clutch pack or too not too mention a complete cleaning and adjust service..AAMCO is reccomended

I will do some research on the headlight problem. An awd system should not bind in a turn like a 4wd does on dry pavement, because the awd has a limited slip differential. And any kind of noise coming from the rearend is NOT normal. You should report the dealership employee that told you this to the factory regional representative. It borders on gross negligence.

I just started having problems today. 2001 ford f150 . It felt like tranny was slipping. Checked fluid, a little low, topped it off. truck goes into reverse but wont move backwards. truck moves forward...

Sounds like the rear end differential is going out. I had a similar problem on a customer's truck, and it was the differential in the rearend. Replaced the rearend, and the noise was gone.

Trannie, no drive no od,no 2 will go in r low 1

if you drove it too far too fast in 4 wheel low. you could have done some serious damage to the trani. i have the same truck in a 1998 and the tachomiter goes nuts at 15 mph in 4 low. it was never meant to drive for any distance in 4 low. if your lucky. when your rearend went it didn't take out your drive shaft. if your not lucky. your drive shaft took some punishment and in turn damaged the trani.

1990 Chevy CK1500 2 wheel drive pickup - Rear end

Is the rearend blown into peices? if yes replace the whole thing. If not put it in reverse and have someone look to see if the rear driveshaft is spinning. If it is you more than likely need a ring and pinion set in the rearend. If it doesn't spin the problem is in your transmission not the rearend.
