Sometimes a rebuilt starter can be defective out of the box...also odd, but some starters require shims to be sure center armature is totally disengaging...the armature must be sticking out farther than it should when it is supposed to disengage...Hope this helps.

When starting truck starter makes a grinding noise but stops after a second, how do I stop this

Grinding noises from the starter are usually caused by a defective starter drive gear and or damaged ring gear teeth. I would suggest removing the starter motor and inspect the starter drive gear as well as the teeth on the ring gear for damage and repair/replace as necessary

Noise my 03 xterra makes when I crank it up. One guy said exhaust manifold and another said knock sensor. Just need a second opinion.

Many times a bad starter motor makes noise like clanking, clicking or grinding when crank the engine. Replace the starter. Sometimes, if the starter motor is grinding the gears on the flywheel, the engine will have a metallic grating sound when you first crank it. This type of starter noise is normally indicative of a starter motor that is worn and about to fail. If you do need to replace your starter this site looks like it has cheap prices, free shipping and great reviews http://www.buyautoparts.com/starter.htm

Will not start, have replaced battery, Starter, sounds like starter is not engaging.

Does the vehicle crank over? or does it make a grinding sound like the gear isn't contacting. If your hearing a grinding noise chances are the flex plate are missing teeth that the starter engages. Only way to replace that is to remove transmission. If your hearing a clicking noise check to make sure the battery connections are tight and the terminals are clean.

What would be the problem with our toyota 4runner starter motor that when we turn the key the starter motor just makes a grinding noise, is it the starter motor or something else??

The grinding noise is the starter hitting the fly wheel. This means that the starter is spinning but may not be engaging all the way. Your Flywheel is probably missing a few teeth now. I recommend replacing starter and flywheel. If you're on a tight budget then you could just replace the starter but it will cost you more in the long run.

Doesn't want to keep running and some grinding noise when startin

From what you describe I would suspect that the starter is not fully engaging. I'm assuming that the grinding noise you hear when you try to engage the starter is INSTEAD of the engine cranking. If I assumed wrong, ignore the following:
Pull the starter, check the flywheel for excessively worn areas. Most of the time the flywheel is ok, it's just the starter. Any time you disassemble a starter you should replace the bushings and brushes. Never remove the starter with the battery still connected. Remove the negative terminal from the battery before you attempt to remove the starter.

When i try to start the car it makes a funny sound and wont start it sounds like something is not catching

Good indication of a bad starter. Is it just clicking or is it a grinding ugly noise?. The second is definately the starter.

Century 2004: Flywheel/Starter or miracle of Lucas oil?

The starter and gearbox are not connected by way of a grinding noise.
If it is the gearbox, I would get it serviced or replaced. If starter motor, the grinding noise will be there only when the dog gear is engaged when starting.

Car makes grinding noise when I try to start,

You may need to install what they call shims in between the starter and the flywheel in order to align it correctly with the flywheel

Did you get the right starter? Did you put the starter straight? Did you lock the screw evenly? where this noise from? You mentioned the noise like high pitch grinding noise, is it from the starter area or flying wheel?
