It sounds like the connecting rod bearings on the piston or the mainbearing has spun on the crank shaft

Why is my engine making a knocking noise, could I possibly get a list of things that cause knocking? It's a 1995 Buick century special, four cylinder.


Many things could be the cause. Common ones are:

  1. Low oil level.
  2. Low oil pressure due to worn out oil pump.
  3. Connecting rod knock (part of piston assembly)
  4. "Piston Slap" - this occurs when the cylinder wall gets worn into a cone shape, wider at the base from the side-to-side motion of the piston over millions of cycles. The wear gets to the point where the piston skirt (bottom edge) hits the side of the cylinder wall as it hits the bottom of the stroke and begins moving upward. Eventually the skirt will break off and the engine will need rebuilding or overhaul.
  5. You could also have a simple valve tap, as you are not really defining knock, although valves usually are more of a ticking noise rather than a knock.
  6. If the knocking only occurs on acceleration, you could have what is known as "octane ping" from fuel that is too low in octane. Not likely with a four cylinder, but some really cheap gas grades are occasionally guilty of being less than advertised for octane.
  7. There are even a few transmission issues that can cause knocking, so make sure you narrow down the issues before diving in too deep.

My 2001 Buick century is knocking. How would I know if its a rod or something easier to fix?


Having owned and worked om a few Buick's , it is probably a Rod bearing . expensive job .

My 98 century v6 is at about 140k and knocks when started... even after oil was just changed. should i be looking for a new car? the ****** and engine doesn't miss and it seems to run perfect, but...


try to change the oil with a high velocity, like 20-50, see what going to happen. If the problem still persist, then next step is check the timing if is right. Also check your knock sensor.

Hello, With so little information, I would HAVE to assume that this is a rod knock. Does it make noise in neutral too? Or only when you drive it. Try to put it in neutral and step on the gas....Does it still knock? A rod knock means you need to rebuild that motor. A rod knock can usually happen from beating on the car or a timing belt slipped a couple of gears. I would check your engine oil level, not transmission. Because low levels of engine oil can create this sound too. Good luck and feel free to write me back with much more detail so that I can further assist you.

What octane gas should I use for a 1996 Buick Century


Most vehicles are designed to run on 87 octane, unless specified different in the owners manual. The knock sensors on your engine will detect an engine knock and advance or ****** the timing accordingly. If your engine is spark knocking, your "Check Engine" light should be on detecting a faulty knock sensor, hope this helps, Gary

Hello, this could be a very big problem. I would first off and check that your oil level is fine. Next, the bearings on your rods or rod bearings may have been "thrown" causing this internal knock and this can be a cataclysmic problem which will lead to engine problems. This knock can also be your valves tapping and this can be from a stuck lifter, to bad valve lash, or a warped camshaft. An engine can also knock from a cooling system problem. Your engine can knock from improper timing which causes pre detonation of a spark. The list can continue from a bad oil pump not supplying oil to your system, to a cooling system failure, to no oil, to bad fouled spark plugs, to a thrown rod bearing, to a bad valve or stuck lifter. So, what does this all mean you may ask. If you do not have a friend who is mechanically savy I would absolutely have this looked at by a professional mechanic. I would first however to check your oil and coolant level before this. By the sound of the noise increasing with an increased load you may have a big problem. I hate being the bearer of bad news but at least you caught the problem now before it came a bigger problem. I hope this fixes your problem and I hope you get the problem fixed!
