Breaklightes wont work

It is most likely the problem is with the brake light switch above the brake pedal arm. Check for power there with a 12 volt test light. Without the brake pedal pressed one side of the switch will light the test light, when the brake pedal is depressed both sides of the switch connector will be hot. Let me know what you find. You can buy a 12 volt test light at any auto parts store for about $5

You may have a defective turn signal switch. The brake light circuit also runs through that switch.

Lowbeam headlights wont work, brake lights are out and check engine light is on...changed th dimmer switch, no luck

For the low beam problem, Swap relays 45 & 46 in the underhood fuse panel. Relay 46 is for the Low Beams. If that fixes the light, replace the relay that cam out of position 46.
Since the high mounted brake light is working, that indicates that the brake switch is good. You need to check the bulbs in the rear tail light assembly, if they are good, check fuse #34.

Hi,

When you say you checked the fuse, was this just a visual check....or did you try replacing the fuse the a new one? Sometimes a visual check doesn't show minute breaks in the fuse wire, which gives a false appearance that the fuse is fine.

When the fuse is ok, this problem normally relates to the brake switch (mounted to the brake pedal). When this switch is replaced, you should always use a multimeter and check the switch is operating correctly when touching the brake pedal.

If the switch is ok, then suspect a faulty relay (if applicable to the Dakota).

Cheers,

On my 1998 ford contour le, my brake lights wont come on. The one on my rear windshield comes on but shouldn't i have some over by the tail lights too?

Yes, check the fuse and brake light relay in the engine compartment relay box. See my tip at http://www.fixya.com/TipsAndTricks/posttipandtrick.aspx?thid=6053280 and let me know if you have questions

Radio, power door locks and the brake lights wont light up when I step on the brake. All this happened at once.

Sounds like a fuse or a relay. Fuse box should be to the lower left of your steering wheel, it will have a diagram inside the cover to tell you what fuse goes to what. Relays are normally under the hood on the right as your facing the vehicle, in a black box.

Just had a similar problem. Brake (stop) lights and horn didn't work. Couldn't find mention of stop lights in fuse chart. Found horn fuse to be slot 21 in the engine fuse block (not the fuse block in car interior). Replaced 15A fuse and all now ok.
