Are you check if SES light on? Any codes stored in the ECM?

Could be the IAC (Idle Air Control) try to check the IAC and adjust the idle... I will also check the temp sensor (ECT); it turned out to be a bad temperature sensor. Yours being a '96 reader codes should be easier to read. The ECT can be tested with an ohmeter in hand in 10 seconds. Get engine hot, nice and hot drive 10 miles or idle for 20 minutes, then place meter across the 2 pin ECT , not the 1 pin one. Then expect 200-300 ohms. scratch that off list. Check details in HERE.

Hope helps.

Starter: about the first one, the starter contains something known as a static solenoid, if this is getting hot and dying the effects are, low tumble if it all, slower dead tumble, intermittent tumble. basically it just dont sound right as you try to start.

for ignition : the car tumbles fine just you dont get enough juice (spark) or fuel .. more than likely tthe spark fuel aint an intermittent problem.. click this link

http://www.aa1car.com/library/no_spark.htm

it has details on checking the ignition and instructions for a fix. so once your car tumbles good, its your ignition. if not the starter.

PS your ignition switch could be at fault as well. Adding a relay to your starter helps..

sorry,, Ok the starter depends on a specific part build into it,, now if this is malfunctioning yo can get problems. But its easy to recgonise cause when you try to tumble it doesnt sound normal, it sounds very different, like its slow turning, clicking, not turning etc. In that case its the starter.

to check the ignition go herehttp://www.aa1car.com/library/no_spark.h... it has details on every part and a simple way to test it..

If your starter is the problem it will not tumble properly if it all, sometimes it sticks, at other times it sounds as if it has no power.

well cars dont start because, starter, fuel power, you have fuel if it was the pump you wouldnt start period,, that leave starter and ignition.. i have tried to simplify my explination above let me know what you need to clarify and I will.

Problem with 1996 GEO Will not spin the motor sometimes

Watch and listen as you turn the switch. Do the dash lites change the same each time? Do you hear a click, which would be the start relay? If these changes and noises don't always happen the same, the ignition switch is wearing out.

old post
is this an electrical question?
the starter has 3 wires.
the ground wire goes to the starter mount bolt.
the hot wire Plus got the big , starter solenoid lug.
the small push on conn, only goes 1 places, the solenoid.
ALT
the lat has 2 connections.
the big lug ring lug, to the starter big stud
then just plug in the rear connnector
that be it.

96 geo tracker will start on time and not the

You didn't indicate that the starter turns over slow--that would be a strong indication of a bad battery, but if so, check your battery. If your battery is more than three years old, replace it. If the battery is good and you still have problems it could be a starter problem.
