2 Answers

I have a 2001 Ford Escape xlt V6 3.0L engine.. I keep getting Engine Code P0401 EGR FLOW INSUFICIENT. The Idle Air Control Valve (p1551) prior to this and we replaced it .. Then this code tripped. I replaced the the air filter, gas cap, , Egr Valve, Egr tube mounted pressure sensor, and Egr Vacuum solenoid. And check the hoses, tried different things like ethanol treatment nothing. ... Reset the code, and the battery and code comes back after abt 30 miles of driving. Wat am i missing? Please Help

Hi, since the flow is probably OK, and the sensor is new, the problem may be with the wiring from the sensor to the PCM. First, disconnect the sensor connector and check to see if there is 4-5.5 volts across the brown/white and orange wires. This will verify the wires are properly connected to the PCM. If there is not 4-5.5 volts, check the same voltage at the PCM, pins 90 and 91. If the voltage is higher at the PCM, disconnect the sensor, run a resistance check on both wires, and repair or replace as necessary. Next, with the sensor disconnected, check the resistance of the brown/light green back to pin 65 of the PCM. If the wire has more than zero ohms, trace for damage and repair or replace the wire.
If all wire have good continuity and the PCM is delivering 5 volts to the sensor, recheck the flow passages for blockage.

guru hello, what is the typical max. resistace of the TPS terminals? Sydney. Please email me answer at

Hi, I would not want to guess on what's typical, because there are too many variations on design. On this 01 Escape model, there are 3 terminals on the TPS. 2 of these are across the full resistance (this resistance does not change when you rotate the sensor input shaft) and the third is the adjustable valve based on the throttle opening. If you have this design, you can know the TPS is good if the resistance across any of the other pairs of terminals varies smoothly from zero to the value found on the 2 fixed terminals. Does this make sense?

I have a p0400diagnostic code egr. what dose this mean I've just bought the manual but I cant find it ford focus 06

P0400 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Flow Description: The electric EGR (EEGR) system is monitored once per drive cycle during steady state conditions above 77 km/h (48 mph). The test fails when a concern is detected by powertrain control module (PCM) calculations indicating the EGR flow is less or greater than expected. Possible Causes:
  • EEGR valve stuck open or closed
  • Connector to EEGR not seated
  • EEGR motor winding circuits short or open
  • No voltage to the EEGR
  • Harness open or shorted to voltage or ground
  • Vacuum signal to manifold absolute pressure (MAP) restricted or leaking
  • Mass air flow (MAF) sensor signal erroneous
  • Carbon build up in the EEGR valve seat area
  • One or more sensors is not responding or is out of range
Diagnostic Aids: All of the following sensors input data to the PCM for correct operation of the EEGR system: engine coolant temperature (ECT), crankshaft position (CKP), intake air temperature (IAT), MAF, throttle position (TP), MAP. Any DTC relating to these sensors must be resolved prior to addressing code P0400. Application Key On Engine Off Key On Engine Running Continuous Memory All GO to Pinpoint Test KD . Ford 4.6L Engine and P0401 Insufficeint EGR Flow

The P0401 code refers to not enough flow of the EGR system. Most common problem for the Ford 4.6L engine, is the flow ports in the throttle housing. If you have this code, try this procedure first, before spending any money.
First remove the two EGR valve mounting bolts. Leave the pipe connection connected to the valve, then remove the air intake tube to the throttle housing. Next remove the throttle housing from the intake by taking out the screws that hold it in place, and disconnect the throttle linkage.
Remove the housing and turn it over, look at the ports (holes) for the EGR valve, they will most likely be covered with carbon crud. Clean these ports out completely, reinstall the housing and tighten all the bolts, reinstall the linkage and air intake tube. Clear the code with a reader, and test.

Where is the egr valve on a 99 Ford expedition

The EGR valve is in a very difficult spot to work on. If the EGR is bad it will set off the check engine light and make the vehicle run rough or stall at idle. It really doesn't make it run rough while driving or accelerating. What are the conditions when the car runs rough?

OBD-II Trouble Code P0401 - Insufficient EGR Flow

EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. It is part of the vehicle emmissions system, and is used to reduce combustion temperature and pressure to control Oxides of Nitrogen. There are generally three parts to the EGR system: the EGR valve, an actuator solenoid, and a differential pressure sensor EGR (DPFE). These things work together to deliver the correct amount of recirculation based on engine temperature, load, etc. The P0401 code means that OBD detected an insufficient amount of EGR. You may notice drivability problems such as pinging (a.k.a. pre-ignition knock) when the engine is under load or the vehicle is at higher speeds. There may also be other symptoms.

A code P0401 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
The DPFE (differential pressure feedback EGR) sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced
There is a blockage in the EGR (tube), most likely carbon buildup
The EGR valve is faulty
The EGR valve may not be opening due to a lack of vaccuum

Check it and keep us updated. Hope this helps (remember to rating this free answer).

P0401 exhaust gas recirculation flow insuficient detected

depending on the year make and model of the vehicle, the most likely cause of this code is the DPFE sensor which controls EGR operation.

I have a 2001 Ford Taurus the check engine light is on the code I got is p0401. What does that mean

insufficient egr flow usually the dpfe sensor located in the back of intake manifold or mounted
on firewall.if you follow the wires/vacuum line from the egr valve you'll see it. common problem
& fairly easy job pick up a new 1 so you no what it looks like

good luck

Engine code p0401 in 2004 ford explorer 4.0 motor insuficient gas flow detected

p0401 is egr flow insufficiant. check or remove and clean egr and port. and also check the vacuum lines to egr. Insufficient EGR flow frequently is caused by clogged EGR passageways.

P401 emission code ford escape 2001 6cyl

P0401 shows an Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient. Without a good scan-tool you will be playing the "Parts Changing Game". Insufficient flow can be the result of a vacuum leak, bad MAP sensor, an exhaust leak, faulty EBP sensor, carbon build-up, and so on. I wish I could say more but with all the electronics it is more complicated then earlier cars.
