Question about 1991 Mercury Capri

1 Answer

My 91 Mercury Capri turns over but will not start. We replaced the ECU and still the same. Also the "check engine" light does not illuminate when the key is turned on that is why we replaced the ECU; but still turns over and does not start. What could this be?

My 1991 non-turbo Mercury Capri started fine last night but while idling, the Air Bag light began to flash and the Battery light came on. Not wanting to travel I turned off the ignition switch. ...

charge the battery and once fully charged, do a LOAD test on it, clean all the connections and start the car ,, check the voltage at the battery posts with the car running, you should get between 13.5 and 14.5 volts, if not, replace the alternator , if you do, the battery and the cables just needed some attention

How do you read the servive engine soon code on a

If your in the U.S. you can go to auto-zone or advance auto and have them test it for you it is obd1 and will need a special scanner to pull codes but it is an easy way to find out if you want more detailed info you can go to and purchase a subscription and they have the way to scan it without a scanner device it changes over the years but try turning your ignition key to the run then off position three times and watch the check engine light if it flashes like this flash pause flash flash that's code 12 and will repeat 3 times it will do this with each code once you have recorded all codes it will flash code 12 again and start over with the codes once you have the codes post them here for what they mean. Most likely a 02 sensor or catalitc converter going out.

1991 Mercury Capri does not have power to fuel pump

Power for the fuel system comes from the ECU. I would start by trying to read the fault codes. If you can not get the reader to communicate with the ECU, I would replace the ECU. Warning: it is expensive. I get mine from wrecking yards.
