Are you sure you have all the forward gears?(4speeds ,three shifts)This is a common problem with this transmission and it is almost always a broken reaction shell. The shell brakes due to a diagnostic code setting and putting the trans into a high pressure setting and braking the shell. It is possible that you have a problem n the reverse input clutches but this is rare.Eithe rway the transmission will need to be removed and diasssembled.Good luck and let me know if I can help.

Just bought 2002 Alero a month ago; whines while driving; then started chattering when starting off in turns; now clunking when put in gear. It has 66,000 miles. "HELP" thanks, GRB

In most cases, this is your CV axle joint failing. It will start out as a whine changing at different speeds. especially when turning and the clunking sound is it is about to totally fail, so it must be fixed fast or you will be looking at a much more expensive repair. Look at the rubber CV axle boots for sign of leaking grease which will tell you which side is the bad joint, pretty obvious as the lose of grease is main reason for failure. FREE-PPV.com

Whining noise on 2002 chevy tracker, comes and goes

Could be your alternator or a bad idler pulley. Is the transmission good? It may be the tranny or your differential whining.

I have a 2002 chevy surburban and it makes a whining noise.

the noise happens running down the road or parked? Is the car a four wheel drive? The alteanator can go bad and whine, the wheel bearings can go bad and whine, windows not fitting right can make a whine The altenator will stop whining if it's unplugged, if this fixes it the battery and the altenater need tested and a bad battery can make the altenator whine and it still be OK. Don't run the engine with the battery disconnected as this can blow alot of expensive stuff and the altenator.

Engine whines when put into gear. When you take

Sounds like you have a planetary gear whine. This is internal to the transmission and only engages when in gear. The only correction is t minimul, a soft rebuild of the transmission.

the reverse clutch has failed in the transmission, this will require the trans be torn down for repair.

Transmission issue, when in reverse heard a clunk, then a whining sound....later there was no reverse...2001 chevy blazer I had the exact same thing happen just today on a 2000 Chevy Blazer. Two weeks...

The loss of 2nd 4th and reverse is a common failure on the 4L60E. What happens is the reaction shell has separated from the sun gear. Often a whole transmission is cheaper simply because the remanufactured unit from GM are reasonably priced and the warranty is 3yr 100,000 miles.

It is inside the transmission. It is called a reaction sun shell, it strips out, which causes the grind noise your talking about.
