Question about Chevrolet 2500

I have a 2000 2500hd. It sounds like there is air in the steering. I tried unloading the suspension, power steering cap off and truck running hoping it would bleed it but noise is still there.

Did the power steering fluid run out or very low.if so then there can be a lot of air in the system to get out.you don`t say how long this has been happening,if its been more than 3-6 days then the system is sucking air into itself either through a bad fitting hose or a seal in the pump,or in the power steering box.unlikely but stranger things have happened.you need the system to be loaded this adds more pressure to move the air out of the system.usually the air will be out within a week of driving.

My power steering fluid comes back out on 2002 Ford Taurus I just put a new belt on it


Darlene, did you by chance overfill the power steering reservoir or was there any other steering work done recently. Could be air in the system, a bad pump, pinched/collapsed hose, etc. You may have to have a good Tech. diagnose and estimate repair. Check the attached links,instruction and guides, Good luck

Power steering pump installation


Matt,
If you hear a buzzing or zinging type of sound when you turn the wheels right or left, that means there is still some air in the pump or pump return lines. To stop the noise and protect the pump, block the rear wheels, place the transmission in park, and apply the parking brake. Jack up the front tires approximately two inches from the ground, making sure they are supported with something strong under the chassis so that it doesn't fall. Loosen the power steering cap just enough to where it will stay on, yet release any remaining air from the system, start the engine, very slowly rotate the front wheels to the right then to the left, this will release any air from the pump and the pump returning lines. When you don't hear any of the buzzing sounds, that means the air was released. Turn off he engine, remove the power steering cap, you will see the small air bubbles rising to the top. If you get any more buzzing sounds from the power steering system, repeat this process adding just enough fluid recommended. I know this sounds unusual, I have worked on Dodges for 43 years and my dad the main mechanic taught me this from his experience. This will also work on many other vehicles with power steering. Hope this helps with your power steering installation.

Trans fluid is red/brown. Stick shows "Full". Noise when turning or going straight. Thank you Charles


Transmission fluid should be bright red. You need to get your transmission fluid changed. Also, the sound that you are hearing when turning and going straight could be your power steering pump going bad, or running dry. When the power steering fluid gets low, the power steering pump tries pumping air, making a growling/whining sound. Try checking your power steering fluid level.

I would try changing the belt. It may be dry and cracked. It will cause whining/squealing sounds. It also will get tension when the steering is turned. It could still be the compressor bearings. The pulley on the compressor still turns when the compressor is off it just don't engage. but i would not change the compressor first.

Air compressor for air suspension on 1994 Lincoln Town car.


Sounds like the compressor isnt getting power nor told to do so.

My first step to try for power is to go to the engine bay, Go to the fuse box above the engine and swap the Horn relay for the one in air suspension and try using the horn. If the horn doesnt work theres your problem!

Next step if above fails. Is to check for any blown fuses and replace as needed then retry.

The air suspension also has a height sensor on it, If that has failed the car wouldnt work out where it was and wouldnt adjust. also there is a Air Suspension/Evo Steering Module which controls the system but if there was a problem with this i belive you would also loose power steering.

I have a 1998 ford expedition eddie bauer with front air bag suspension and after driving for about 45 minutes the air suspension light comes on. what's the problem and how do I fix it


here's some info. Do you have a warning light on or does it say "Check Susp"?

Control Module
NOTE: The 4-wheel air suspension (4WAS) control module is also used for the rear air suspension (RAS) system. The internal processor recognizes external circuitry to determine if it is installed in a 4WAS or a RAS system.
NOTE: The air suspension control module is calibrated with information from the air suspension height sensors. A new or swapped air suspension control module requires the ride height adjustment calibration process to be performed.
A microcontroller-based electronic air suspension control module controls the air compressor motor (through a solid state relay), and all system solenoids. The air suspension control module also provides power to front and rear height sensors. The air suspension control module controls vehicle height adjustments by monitoring the two height sensors, vehicle speed, a steering sensor, acceleration input, the door ajar signal, transfer case signals, and the brake pedal position (BPP) switch. The air suspension control module also conducts all fail-safe and diagnostic strategies and contains self-test and communication software for testing of the vehicle and related components.
The air suspension control module is mounted in the passenger compartment inside the instrument panel, above the radio and temperature controls. The air suspension control module is interchangeable between the RAS and 4WAS system.
The air suspension control module monitors and controls the system through a 32-pin two-way connector. The air suspension control module is keyed so that it cannot be plugged into an incorrect harness. There are two sides of the harness connection to the air suspension control module. Each is uniquely colored and keyed to prevent reversing the connections.
Solenoid, Air Spring
swj~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif WARNING: Never rotate an air spring solenoid valve to the release slot in the end cap fitting until all pressurized air has escaped from the spring to prevent damage or injury.
The air spring solenoid:
  • Allows air to enter and exit the air spring during leveling operations.
  • Is electrically operated and controlled by the air suspension control module.
  • Is only replaced as a unit.
Air Suspension Diagnostic Connector
The air suspension diagnostic connector is used to aid the technician in diagnosing the air suspension system. It is also used to vent the system of compressed air when air suspension system components need to be repaired or replaced. The air suspension diagnostic connector is located under the steering column.
Steering Sensor
The steering sensor is mounted inside the passenger compartment on the steering column. It provides steering rate and position to the air suspension control module through two signals.
Pressure Relief Valve
The pressure relief valve (PRV) protects the rear air suspension components by venting the system to a specific pressure in the case of a system malfunction. The system will decrease the pressure to an acceptable level to maintain vehicle height. In the normal operation mode with normal system pressure the PRV is constantly closed and does not have any effect on the system performance or function. The PRV is replaceable without any air lines.
The PRV is located in the rear of the vehicle on the middle of crossmember #5 as a part of the rear air line assembly.

It could be the pump, or you could also be low on power steering fluid. First off, check the level of the fluid and make sure it's adequate. Next, you can "burp" the power steering system easily, which will get rid of any air bubbles that could be in there. Easiest way is to jack the front end off the ground (both wheels), start the engine, take off the power steering fluid reservoir cap, and turn the wheel side to side as far as it'll go, several times. This circulates the fluid through the system and pushes any bubbles in there up to the reservoir, where they'll float up to the top and "burp" into the air.

If neither of those things works, you may have problems with the steering rack and pinion, or possibly with your suspension (check the tie rods, inner and outer, as well as the bushings in the various suspension pieces).
