Chevy Malibu 2001 with 89,000 miles idling too high during park

Back to the mechanic - sounds like either an IAC motor or TPS sensor is the problem, but also could be the throttle cable (sticking leaving the throttle not fully closed).

Engine idles high cold or warm. I have checked the crank key-way and all is good.

too fast idle. it is too high right?
but how high? the 4wd model has
a dash tachometer. post that reading.
this has long list of cause.
The hot engine ,idles at 800 rpm A/C off.
the ECU controls that, if it dont idle a 800 hot.
then , : (im skipping cold due to harder to diagose and rpms not stated)

1; Is the coolant temp,
180F min, to 200F max , is it?
if not all EFI cars fail idle her.e.
2: next, is IAC or ISC failure.
the IAC must only be open cold.
the ISC is electric and operates under ECU control
and a 2 fast idle means the ISC has lost control.
it can lose control any time you have air leaks in the intake.
illegal.
the main page on idle is here
http://www.fixkick.com/IDLE-AIR/idle-index-home.html

the 98 specific page is here26 ways to fail. here.
http://www.fixkick.com/IDLE-AIR/16v-idle.html

even a loss distributor base clamp (bad service)
can cause idle to fail.
1: ISC(electric) dirty, clean it.?
2: bad thermostat.
3: IAC (a pure thermo device) stuck open. (my 96 was)

Chevy Malibu Cold Idle Problem

Check the water coolant thermostat. If it is stuck in the "open" position you are heating up all the water in the coolant system and this will take time. The thermostat keeps the water in the engine until warmed up to almost normal running temperature, only then does it allow the coolant to enter the radiator.

My 99 malibu starts and dies right away. It won't stay on unless I keep the gas pedal down and rpm above 1500

the ( iac ) idle air control is sticking and needs cleaned. heres how to clean. locate it on the throttle body, remove wire connector, remove the torx screws that hold it on. when off of car. clean valve on end you can use a old toothbrush or similar to do this. do not push in on valve it will mess up idle setting. on the 3.1 the setting is 1 and 1/8 from tip of valve to body of iac. you can use gumout spray or throttlebody cleaner. here are a few symtoms-- stalls after starts, when cold or hot. stalling on deceleration, stalls at idle, unstable idle, low idle, or stuck on high idle. hope this helps !

Check your IAC motor (Idle Air Control) It could be sticking open.
Ps. Might be called Idle Speed Control motor it depends on the make and i forget what chevy calls theres.

My 02 malibu is idleing too hight how do i fix the problem. brian

Check your idle air control valve(IAC), it should be along your throttle body. Try disconnecting the wire harness to the IAC and see if there is a difference to the engines idle. If there is no change it may be dirty with carbon build up and seized, it needs to be cleaned with throttle body cleaner or it may need to be replaced. Good luck and hope this helps. After cleaning or replacing the IAC you need to reset the base line for it's idle, Turn the ignition to the run position for 30 sec and then turn the key to the off position for 10 sec then start the ending and let idle for 1 min then go for a test drive. Good luck and hope this helps.
