Question about 1989 Buick Reatta

1 Answer

1989 Buick Reatta oil in coolant and rising oil level

I bought this car knowing of this problem, although the seller tried to hide it.
I pointed it out to him, he said it was probably stop-leak, right. I said no it's not.
Being the genius I am, I fooled him and bought it anyway.
I don't run it, but the 2 mile drive from the sellers house to mine resulted in the oil level going from proper level to almost double on the dip-stick.
And, of course the coolant went down.
Now I'm wondering if there's a way I can be sure it's the upper/lower intake gaskets and not head gaskets or some other nightmare.
Is there a post or site somewhere that could walk me through the repair.
Or an online manual, book, anything...?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Waldo

Your probably right on the intake gaskets. However there is no site that i am aware of that will walk you through getting this project and problem fixed. there is a Haynes chilltons manual on this care that will walk you through the steps on repairing this issue. the book the last i knew was about 17 to 18 dollars.

Coolent went down and oil level shot up, what do i do-drain the oil, its leaking oil real fast now right after an oil change

Drain the oil and check for coolant, if there is coolant present, you have a head-gasket problem. You may also notice sweet smelling exhaust because of the coolant leaking into the cylinders.

My reatta has an oil leak, and the gage dropped to low and the car died, i put more oil in and it was fine for a couple days then bam it happened again, this happened sooner each time, and simultaneously...

well it sounds like you have a major problems here . If your coolant level is dropping and the oil level is high it sounds like you have a head gasket leaking coolant into your oil system . Is the oil a milky color . if so i would look at a head gasket problem . Also if the oil does look milky it may have gumed up the oil level sensor so it is not working right

Car overheated once. added more coolant. Now coolant level goes down gradually from time to time, but engine oil seems to be rising. no coolant on the ground that I can tell. whats the problem?

have you noticed some coolant in your engine oil? it will make some bubbles/foam in your oil. If so, the engine head might be cracked and your coolant is mixing with your engine oil. That would explain the reason why your coolant goes down and your oil level goes up.

The lights for the radio, climate, gauges, ect do not come on

Are you referring to the message center??? The message center is the CRT display in the center of the dash that controls your radio, A/C, heat, displays gauges, etc.

If that's not lighting up, you need to replace the unit. I have a spare one if you're interested. It's not perfect. The very bottom of the screen is starting to become very slightly distorted, but I will sell it very cheap. Just bought the entire interior from an '88 Reatta from a junkyard. Message center came with it. Let me know.
