i was driving down the street. i was going 20km per hour when the car shut off by itself. all the instruments and stereo were still on.i waited for an hour before i trried to start again and it didnt start, crank or click. i towed it to the mechanic and he said that the starter and altenator are fine and seems to be a problem with the security features(key).i tried disconnecting the battery then reconnecting. it still wont start.

You can retrieve and read the trouble codes from your Cougar right from your home garage. All you need is an OBD I code reader. The Mercury Villager was a minivan produced by Ford Motor Company from 1993 to 2002. It has an On-Board Diagnostics first-generation computer (OBD I) that receives and stores trouble codes sent to it from sensors positioned throughout the vehicle. When the computer receives one of these codes, it alerts you to the situation by illuminating a warning light on the instrument panel.

1. Put the key into the ignition and turn it "On," but don't start the engine.
2. Plug the OBD I code reader into the diagnostic port located on the driver's dashboard underneath the steering column.
3. Turn the code reader on and wait for it to interface with the computer. Select the "Read Codes" command from the menu on the code reader.
4. Write down the codes it displays on a piece of paper. Look up the meaning of the codes in the code reader manual.
5. Unplug the code reader from the dashboard and turn off the vehicle. Have your car serviced or repaired based on the information obtained from the codes.

About procedure to disarm the theft or security, I suggest check in this link the Cougar Owners Manual.

Hope helps.

Welcome to Fixya

Try to unplug the terminal of the battery and let it sit for coupl of minutes. Put the terminal back to the battery and try to start the engine.

if this is a sceurity problem, the light indicator for your security alarm should lit up. Could you check if you have the alarm light lit up?

Rather then guessing as to what the problem is , test . Is there a security light lit on the instrument cluster ? Does the vehicle have fuel pressure , spark ? Does the check engine light come on with the key in run position ?

99 mercury cougar I lost my key. I replaced my steering column with another steering column with key. My car wont start so what do I do next.

The problem is with the factory security system; you'll need to reset the security code matching between the security system and the code on your keys that came with the new column.

99 mercury cougar wont crank no spark anti theft light flashing

a bad security system would restrict the ignition system from activating so the engine may be perfectly fine but until the security system give it the ok, its gonna sit. have someone take a look at the security system and see if they cant fix the system or deactivate it (what use is a security system if your car wont start right?)

99 sable won't start, replaced battery, starter, alternator, but still wont even crank. code reader also said map sensor so it was reset worked for alittle but now nothing

If the car does not have a security system, I would check for voltage at the starter from the battery and from the key switch.
The power from the key switch goes thru the neutral safety switch before getting to the starter.

99 mitsubishi mirage just died as i was driveing. now wont crank, sounds like timing is off. Any suggestions

If the car dies like you flipped a killswitch and wont even try to crank the motor I would definitely lean toward the ignition switch in the steering column is fried. Once it shorts out the car dies and wont crank.

99 chevy lumina wont crank!

you probably have a broken wire in the ignition that reads the resistance in the chip in the key. there are two wires that attach the ignition switch to the security system.I had the same problem and it can be easily fixed by putting a resister in place of the chip in the key.any garage that puts alarm systems in cars will be able to do this very easily and very economically.
