This might not be exactly the same as you engine (which you do not identify), but will give you some idea of what to look for on the crankshaft pulley and the casing.

How can i determined the timeng mark of the camshaft in the v6 kia cadenza there is 3timeng marks in one camshaft and this engine is four overhead camshaft


To ensure you don't get the timing expensively wrong I advise vehicle-specific information.

The additional marks could be marks for safe dismantling or assembly or marks for performing a valve timing check or perhaps a cam sprocket made for a variety of models.

It should be relatively easy to determine which mark to use, though you mention nothing about whether other marks are present and which cylinders are served by that camshaft.
Assuming other marks are present and having removed the spark plugs and exposed the valve gear the engine can be set at TDC on the timing cylinder and whatever other marks there is aligned, ensuring the valves of number 1 cylinder are both closed and the cams are in the compression position for that cylinder.

With the engine in this position the valves of the first cylinder in the second half of the firing order should be in the overlap position, which I think is number 4 (I don't have data to hand).

Setting No 1 and No 4 pistons and valves in this way should then indicate which of the three marks are to be used for timing, again assuming there is a static mark to align one of the sprocket marks with.

It isn't unusual for engines built by robots to require setting tools for subsequent maintenance and repair; in other words it isn't unusual for engines built by robots to have no timing marks at all...

Setting an engine timing by logic is really only suitable as an emergency procedure unless verified by TDC finder, degree discs and dial gauges along with valve timing information.
Manufacturer information is a much easier method.

set mark on crankshaft to TDC mark on timing cover. set mark on cam pulley to align with mark on head .if more than one mark on pulley rotate by hand till exhaust and inlet just rocking then align closest marks .

Ignition timing for tuneup should be 6 degrees BTDC measured with timing light And engine idling at 600 to 700 RPM, vacuum advance to distributor removed for setting timing. The timing light is set up with the trigger lead connected to the spark plug of cylinder number one which is the first cylinder form the front of the engine.

Be sure to remove the "SPOUT" connector first for an accurate baseline ignition timing. It will be in the vicinity of the ignitionmodule itself, it will hang out from the harness as 2 wires plugged into a small plastic piece. Remove for setting timing and replace when done.

The timing mark on the main pulley should be marked with chalk for visibility, and it should be algined with engine running with the casting behind that front pulley and to the left as you face the front of the engine. at between 6 and 10 degrees Before Top Dead Center. The casting is marked off with the degrees on either side of "TDC" and "before,"

The timing adjustment is made by loosening the clamp bolt that holds the distributor in the engine just enough to allow rotation of the distributor with some effort, but not much. Once timing has been set, retighten clamp bolt.


For cam timing when timing belt is replaced, the engine is rotated so piston on number 1 cylinder is at top dead center, the cam gear has a mark on it's edge for number 1 cylinder that aligns with an alignment mark cast in the head.

Hi Robert, It would help to know what engine is in your vehicle? A rule of thumb way to set up the valve timing is as follows. Rotate the crank shaft until the crank shaft mark is about 90 degrees from TDC. This will protect the valves from damage when rotating the cams to align them. With the tappet cover removed rotate the cam shaft or shafts so that the number one cylinder is on compression (both inlet and exhaust valves fully closed) and the last cylinder in line on overlap, Look for adjacent timing marks on the cam gears and somewhere close to those look for the alignment marks (maybe notch marks, holes or indented match marks). (Some manufactures use the machined gasket surface where the tappet cover closes onto the cylinder head). Look closely for the static mark on the cylinder head and align the cam(s) to it or them. Once completed, set the crank at Top Dead Center and look carefully for a timing mark which aligns with the gear and set them. Fit the belt so the marks align when the tensioner bearing is released and presses the belt under load. (follow the manufactures recommended tightening instructions.) . (Remember never to crimp a timing belt, if it has been, throw it away and get another, even if it is new!) If the belt snapped and that is the reason for replacement, internal damage may have resulted inside the engine. A snapped belt may cause damage to the valves, the camshafts, the cam shaft caps and to the pistons. If the engine turns much faster than expected and sounds as if there is no compression, you have problems! (Those I've just mentioned. I hope not for your sake. best of luck Regards John

How to set timing on a 1997 s10 blazer 4.3 vortec. why dose the harmonic balencer have 2 timing marks on it & what one do you set the timing from? thanks


The reason there are two timing marks on the balancer is because you can line up the top mark with the mark on the timing cover and the bottom mark with the mark on the block. This is top dead center for number 1 cylinder you dont need to crank the motor over with your finger over the no 1 plug hole or watch the valve springs on number one cylinder anymore now they have made it simple just line up the marks and you are at tdc no1 cylinder if you want diagrams email me. Where to set the timeing to a cadillac deville model 1997 with a north star engine. i am trying to set the timing on my cadillac and i need to know where is the sprocket setting


The timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket should be at the 12 O'clock position.....the timing mark on the intermediate sprocket should be at the 6 O'clock position...in other words, the two timing marks are aligned.
The drive pins on the 4 camshafts must be vertical or perpendicular to the cylinder head, ie 90 degrees to the cylinder head surface.

there should be an acid mark (black mark) on gear, and yes cylinder #1 top dead center ps. make sure to disconnect distributor so it dont fire

How to set time


You should be at the corect timing mark if the belt was installed properly. You should use a timing lite to be sure that it is bang on the money if you think it is off. here is another way to double check if you don't have a timing lite. First dis-connect the negative battery lead for safety reasons. locate your timing mark on your harmonic balancer ( the large pulley on the crank shaft ) mark it with some chalk or white paint. remove the # 1 spark plug and put a long screw driver in the cylinder and turn the engine by hand until the # 1 piston reaches the top. ( be carefull that the screw driver does not bind in the cylinder ) check to see where the mark is on the harmonic balancer and if it is lined up to where it is suppse to be. If you can not see it then rotate the engine again until it has the # 1 cylinder at the top again then you should see the timing mark . at this point take the top off of the distributor and the rotor should be pointing at the # 1 cylinder.
