Question about Nissan Altima

1 Answer

I have a 1988 Nissan Altima with 186,000 miles. When I started the car today the battery light an brake light came on and didn't go off when I tok the car out of park. I drove 1 mile and pulled over to shut car off and white smoke was coming out from under the hood on the passenger side, it smelled like burning rubber. I also noticed that when the car was running the engine sound was a little bit more higher pitched, like the rpm's where higher.

Sounds like you have a broken belt that runs the alternator. Usually when the battery and brake lights come on it means the alternator isn't charging. Either that or the alternator burnt up.

2004 Nissan Altima 3.5L BATTERY LIGHT went on during 15 minute drive. Next day car "died" while idling after a 20 minute drive. BRAKE WARNING LIGHT & BATTERY LIGHT on prior to full electrical failure.

Start with checking the alternator voltage with a multimeter. With the car off check the voltage in the battery which should be holding 12v charged less if flat of course then start the car and test the battery again. If the alternator is good you should be getting a reading of 14 to 14.5 v if it's the alternator it'll A) not put any charge into the battery or B) be a very low voltage being anything under 13.5 v

My 2008 nissan altima with push button start only makes a clicking sound and dash lights come on,the brake lights come on when i press the brake, and the battery is good in car and key fob

Whether or not the battery will allow the car to start will depend on the cranking amps it is still producing. Too little CCA and the starter motor will not kick over. Unless you specifically test the CCA the battery is producing you cannot say if it is "good" or not.

Try to jump start the Nissan from another vehicle with the engine idling in that vehicle. If the Nissan starts you know the battery in the Nissan is the problem and if the battery you have is 3 years or more old it can be suspect.

I have a 1988 Nissan Altima and the dash lights went out. Is this a fuse or something else? If fuse, where is it? I didn't see one for the dashboard.

The fuse should be located under the dash on the driver side & fuses are also located under the hood. The best thing to do is to check your owners manual & it will point you directly to where your doom fuse is located. Also check to make sure your dimmer switch isn't turned off or low for the dash.

My 2005 Altima is stuck in park. Automatic transmission, low miles starts right up and steering wheel is not locked. Help please!!!

http://www.nissanclub.com/forums/2005-2006-nissan-altima-se-r-discussion/225903-shift-lock.html

your owner's manual will tell you how to over-ride the shift lock. ususally there is a hole covered by a plastic piece, next to the shifter. pop out the cover and push the button to shift. The shifter will lock back up in park until you fix the problem. You may want to set the parking brake and use neutral when you park the car instead of " Park". That way you will not have to push the release button-it will eventually break.

make sure your brake lights work; as the shift lock is powered by the brake light fuse-replace as needed.

Going through alternators

Hi there, I am a girl (i.e. not car savvy), but I have a 1998 Altima as well, and the first time (4 months ago) I noticed the brake and battery lights on simultaneously, I took it to a Nissan service shop. Everything seemed fine until about a month ago when the symptoms returned. I ignored the problem for 3 days and the car just stopped running, period. Took it back to the shop, figured out it was a fauly alternator, got it sorted, no problem. Today (1 month after replacement), I see the same bloody problem, and I'm taking it back to the shop in the morning. I am wondering... is it the alternator, or something connected to the alternator that is malfunctioning? The 2 alternators put in were "rebuilt" since they didn't have genuine Nissan alternators available. I really hope the dealers aren't taking me for a merry ride.

My Nissan Altima 97's Emergency brake light and battery light coming on while driving this afternoon. But I didn't feel any other abnormal things. I cleaned the battery cable connection with W-40 and...

Battery light means the alternator is not charging so if you keep driving it eventually the battery will die. The brake light may be on if the emergency brake lever is pulled even a little bit.
