Fuel Pump Electrical Circuit
OPERATION
When the key is turned ON with out the engine running, the control module turns a fuel pump relay ON for two seconds. This builds up fuel pressure quickly. If the engine is not started within two seconds, the control module shuts the fuel pump OFF and waits until the engine starts. As soon as the engine is cranked, the control module turns the relay ON and runs the fuel pump.
When the engine is cranking or running, the control module receives the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor reference pulses which in turn energize the fuel injectors. As a back-up system to the fuel pump relay, the fuel pump can also be turned ON by a fuel pump oil pressure switch. When the
engine reaches about 28 kPa (4 psi), and the fuel pump relay does not complete the circuit, the fuel pump oil pressure switch will close to complete the circuit to run the fuel pump.

An inoperative fuel pump relay can result in long cranking times, particularly if the engine is cold. The fuel pump oil pressure switch will turn ON the fuel pump as soon as oil pressure reaches about 28 kPa (4 psi).

You can test to see if the relay it's self is bad by swapping it temporarily with another relay. If your truck has AC then that one should be compatible. Just compare the two to see if they're the same and if so, try using the AC's relay.

Need to see fuse for fuel relay. locate fuse panel

The Fuse panel is in the cab of the truck, passenger side kick panel. If you lay on the floor and look at the kick panel, you should see a thumb raise in the panel. Pull the panel with the finger raise like a door towards the rear of the truck, the hing would be the a pillar side of the cover.

Once this the cover is off, you will see the fuse panel cover and the fuel inertia switch

Fuse # 34.

If you are having a crank no start issue, press down on the fuel inertia switch button ( on the top, think it is a red button ), and try again.

If not, check the fuse with a meter with the key in the run position ( use the pins on the back of the fuse to a meter and a ground lug is in the kick panel near the floor, should have + 12V DC on both pins on the fuse ).

If the fuse tests good and the fuel inertia switch is in the reset position, next is to check the FPDM ( Fuel Pump Driver Module ) on the cross member under the rear of the truck, above the spare tire.

The FPDM can have corrosion build up under it, causing the PC Board to crack.
This is a picture from my 2006, where the case was cracked, but had not cracked the PCB.
The spare tire cable for the lift is to the right of the picture, the tire on the left is the driver's sode rear tire, taken facing the front of the truck from the rear bumper

The new kit has stand offs on it, to provide some room so the corrosion does not happen ( or happen as much )

This is what the fuse for the fuel pump relay, and the fuel inertia feed power to, to run the fuel pump.

1997 Ford F150 Electric Fuel Pump will npt pump

Did you check the fuel inertia switch in the passenger side kick panel ?

The fuel pump is powered :
the fuse to the fuel pump relay.
The fuel pump relay to the fuel inertia switch
The fuel inertia switch to the fuel pump itself.

At the fuel inertia switch in the kick panel, power from the relay is the Dark Green w/ Yellow stripe wire and the pink w/ black stripe wire is the power. from the fuel inertia switch to the fuel pump.

If you jumper the fuel pump relay, you should hear it run. If not pull the fuel pump relay, and check the pins in the relay socket, pin 30 should be the power from the fuse.

If you have power at pin #30, jumper the relay socket as shown with the red line above, and check the dark green w/ yellow stripe wire at the fuel inertia switch for power.
Press the button on the top of the fuel inertia switch, and check for power leaving the fuel inertia switch on the pink w/ black stripe wire.

This is tests good, check for power at the fuel pump, same pink w/ black stripe wire.
Fuel inertia switch info is in the owners manual, If you did not get an owners manual with your truck ( purchased used ), you can download one from Ford :

Were is fuel pump relay located

The fuel pump relay (square/silver looking part) is located right above the fuse box panel under the driver's side dash. Go under the driver's side and you will see two squares. It'll be the one that is higher up

No power at fuel pump chev.S-10 looking for fuel pump relay and fuse

The fuel pump relay is located Under hood, driver side, upper firewall, mounted in relay block.

The fuse is located under the instrument panel to the left of the steering column. The fuse block should be visible from underneath the steering column, near the pedal bracket. If the panel is not visible, check for a removable compartment door or trim panel which may be used on later models to hide the block.

Cant find fuel pump relay

Hey twinbullet,

For 93-98 Jetta models, the fuses and relays are located on the drivers side, behind the lower dash panel.

The fuel pump relay is in Position 12 (lower right corner)
