Take it to an auto-zone or similar parts store where they can test the charging system output. It happens all too often these days that a rebuilt part like the alternator is faulty and will need replaced again, hopefully, under warranty.

Sounds like you have bad wiring or some other electric draw somewhere. You need to do a parasitic drain test, you have a hot wire somewhere, that grounds out and drains your battery, so the above test might not find it, if it is not grounding out when you do your checking.

Keep in mind that you have one voltage regulator, this device is internal in the alternator.

Did you ever fully charge the the battery on a charger ? It takes a long time for an alternator to fully charge a dead battery.
On 2 amp a charger can take from 6 -12 hours to fully charge a battery
so, that gives you some indication of how much charge your battery is
getting in a 20 minute drive. Add to that the strain of starting and
maybe cold temps and the battery is struggling.

I have seen alternators bad out of the box or had them fail shortly after installing so don't rule that out.

Charge the battery to full charge. Check the voltage, should be 12.5v-12.8v at rest [no load, car not
running]. Start the car, test it again ... should be at least 1.5v
    higher.

Do I have a bad alternator?

Do you hear any squealing when you drive the car? If so the belt is slipping so yes. Replace it anyway because you don't want it to snap and Replace the battery. Retest the charging voltage you are looking for 12.7v to 13.9 if you don't have a multi meter take it to another garage and ask nicely if they could check the charging voltage most will not charge but you want the voltage NOT pass/ fail or its fine
I recommend this as some battery faults can give faulse charging readings

Running normal then just stopped, cranks Ok ,Battery good

My 83 camry died one day on my way to school. I noticed that while I was driving my lights started diming then the engine just shut down. Found out that my alternator was dead. In your case have your alternator tested, your battery charged and check to make sure you have the belt that turnes the alternator and note if there are more than 3 cracks in the ribs of the belt per inch, I would replace the belt while you have the alternator out.

Meaning of red battery light on dash

Hello Mdeon.

The red light is indicating that the alternator is not correctly charging or not charging at all.
Basic check would be to verify that the drive belt is actually turning the alternator. A loose belt can do this.
If the belt is OK, then check the connections at the alternator for looseness or corrosion.
Check the main terminal at the alternator for 12.5 volts ignition key off.
Make sure the mounting bolts for the alternator are clean and tight.
If all that checks out, replace the alternator, it is defective.

Thank you for using FixYa.

I was driving and the car stopped. i jumpstarted it and drove a little further and it stopped again. is it possibly battery or alt.

it is probably the alternator. When the car is running the batteries primary funcion is to power accessories and other electronic functions. Once the car is starrted the alternator takes over and powers the engine and keeps the battery charged. If you can drive it to autozone they will check your battery and alternator for free.

Battery light came on,no power steering.Tried to drive home,ABS light came on,wipers were slow also.Pulled in,car wouldn't start again.

It is most likely your alternator. Your alternator failed and then your battery lost its charge. Have the battery charged and tested before you replace anything just to double check. Either way, the battery needs to be charged seperately. Don't try to charge it with your new alternator or jumper cables as this could burn up your new alternator.

LOW BATTERY CHARGE ON NEW BATTERY-2000 kia Sephia

i would take the belt off and then check the idler pulley assembly..it could be worn out..since the belt is off check the alternator pulley for any play also. A loose belt will not help the battery to keep a charge. if everything looks o.k. and you said you have a new battery and belt then it looks like your alternator went bad. Hope this helps.

Replaced alternator and battery 2x and only works for short time.

This could be caused by a faulty voltage regulator, but since it has happened on more that one alternator, that can't be the problem, right? The next thing that I would look at would be a defective or loose belt. Also check the tensioner to make sure it is working properly and is keeping tension on the belt. If the belt is slipping or is worn out, it will cause voltage fluctuations. You may want to look at changing or at least inspecting the belt. Hope this helps and best wishes.
