I have been told by the ford dealer that the motor to my sunroof has gone bad and that something is wrong with the track. I would like to do the repairs myself. The sunroof in stuck open in the tilt position. Is there a manual or advice that I can get to do this repair?

Hello, This can be a repair with problems. You may save money on the Labor part, but look into what guarantees a Repair shop makes for leaks. Just 1 leak can ruin the headliner and other parts which cost more than you'd save in Labor.

A lot of Sunroofs were made by ASC, but you may have any brand and you need to know before ordering replacement parts. Your best move is to educate yourself in a Salvage yard. You would get the opportunity to see the parts up close. You may find it is cheaper to replace the entire mechanism with a Salvage part, than to buy a motor and repair parts from the Dealer.

There are shops which do this work, like Glass shops, and they may be cheaper than a Dealer. Another thing is that Sunroofs can be Generic. A Sunroof can fit several Models from 1 Manufacturer or between Manufacturers which gives you more of chance of finding compatible parts.

If you do this yourself, go to a Paint Supply for Autos for your adhesive and sealer. There are different types of caulk, with Marine grade being better. You may find some things on a Browser search once you Identify your Sunroof make.

I hope I have been very helpful in providing answers. I have installed Marine hatches on boats and Deck and Thru-Hull fittings. Check your fuse for the Sunroof motor, and check the guide bolts which can back out the frame and jam the track. I have found over the years that Plastic parts tend to break in the same spot and that guide bolts cause much of the problem.

Received your messages. This is a general procedure for removing a Ford sunroof motor. Remove the Headliner. Pull on the flex cable until it is out of the motor. Tracethe wires from the motor to the direction of the nearest plastic panel and remove the panel, then disconnect. Take out the mounting screws, then separate the flex cable tube from the motor/ gear unit. Remove motor.

Now I have also included AutopartsWarehouse.com as a source of discount Motorcraft motors. They show an original model and a higher priced model, both made by Motorcraft. You would have to call them at 1-800-913-6119 to ask about the difference. There is also a site called SunroofDoctor.com at 1-417-7882707. You may call and find out what diagrams may be included with the new motor.

I could have provided a price, but when you use a site like this, you need to provide a Brand, Model, and Year of what you are driving to get the right answers. Still, your absolute best learning place is a Salvage Yard. You will find out how the Headliner fits, what trim has to be dropped to remove it, and the wire locations. You can also buy a used motor there.

Also get some plastic gloves and plan on switching them several times if you do not want to ruin your Headliner.

2004 expedition sunroof keeps opening on its own, I keep closing it and seconds or minutes later it opens again???

WHEN IT DOES CLOSE, DOES IT ACTUALLY SEAL GOOD LIKE IT SHOULD?? IF NOT, THEN YOU HAVE SOMETHING POSSIBLY IN THE TRACKS THAT CAUSES IT TO RE-OPEN IMMEDIATELY, SO I WOULD CHECK THE TRACKS VERY WELL, AS THATS THE ONLY THING THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN DO JUST WHAT YOU ARE DESCRIBING. THE ONLY OTHER ISSUE COULD BE THE ACTUAL SUNROOF MOTOR IS BAD, OR A SHORT IN THE ACTUAL WIRING TO THE MOTOR MECHANISM, CAUSDING THE IMMEDIATE REVERSAL OF THE SUNROOF. IF TRACKS ARE CLEAR OF ALL OBSTACLES, THEN CHECK THE WIRING FOR POSSIBLE SHORTS.

My 2000 Lexus RX 300 Sunroof is stock and is not closing. electric motor seem to be working but is stock in one position. any idea how to fix this sunroof?

I have the same problem..... took my 2000 RX300 to the dealer - was told they need to replace the motor and the tracks and quoted me a price of $4500.00...... NO THANK YOU.... This dealer will not sell parts for this to local garages. Can't believe they can get away with that. Since I don't really us it a mechanic told me to take it to a glass company and just have them seal it closed to stop leaks.

Can a sunroof motor, when it stops working, cause the track to bend?

no this can not cause the track to bend.Someone was trying to shut the sunroof while the motor is not working ,or when it was working there was something in the way when it was being shut and that cause the track to become bent.

My sunroof will not close. I can hear the noise

It sounds like the switch has gone bad or that there is something wrong with the track. If you look on the inside of the sun roof you should be able to see four screws. These screws hold the sunroof in place and to the track. Take those screws out and then the glass. If you look down where the track is when the glass is out and push the button to open and close you should be able to see the track move. If you cant see it move when it is supposed to open pull the switch and see if you are getting power to the open and close side of the switch.

New model 99 Jetta. Sunroof only tilting not sliding

When you turn switch to the slide back position, do you hear the motor running ? If yes, might have a blocked or bad track. This will require you to remove trim covers and glass to have access to the track. Once all parts removed, turn the switch to open as you look at the motor and track move.

Sunroof won't operate

Sun roofs all have a common problem in design...Ther are all on the roof...and exposed to rain, dirt, dust, etc. etc. Your sliding tracks are probably clogged with the above mentioned and are causing a binding in the track sleeves which makes the motor work much harder and causes the motor brushes to overheat and stall or burn up completly. Next time the motor is replaced, make sure the technician thoroughly cleans and properly lubricates the tracks, sleeves, and guides.

1996 ford explorer sunroof wont close

This website shows it has manuals and online diagrams like that. Sometimes a dealer parts guy will run you a copy of a parts diagram. It is a 13 year old vehicle- a salvage yard may have something torn apart that you could see.

My 1998 jeep grand cherokee sunroof was working fine, until sunday now the sunroof in open from the rear and will not close. All I hear is a clicking sound overhead

It is the relay switch but there's a workaround and you don't have to spend 800 bucks plus. You can take down part of the headliner and replace the relay switch or, if you want to avoid spending the money, you can simply disable the sunroof - after all - who uses it? You can a.) pull the headliner driver side to get to the rear relay/motor and reverse polarity (the connector) as long as you have the front top console plug jumpered to open/close the sunroof or b.) get to the rear relay without totally dissaembling your car and replace the relay in about 2 hours and after spending about $180 for the part.
