There is play in the steering and wen driving it feels lyk one of the rear wheels is going to fall off, but wheel nuts are done up tight and were tightened evenly

Could be a wheel bearing, ball joint or tie rod end. All of these components keep the wheel tight to the chassis and suspension of the car. If there is play in the wheel or the steering wheel doesn't seem as responsive I would imagine you have some loose parts in your steering or suspension system. This can be very dangerous as wheels can fall off the car while driving if the condition is bad enough. Take it to a shop ASAP and have them look at your steering and suspension system!

Shaking, Play in Steering, Wobble all of which get worse at 45, and smooth out at about 60-65


I had that on my Acura. It was caused by warped brake rotors.
They may not have replaced the rotors on your brake job.

Brake rotors are usually warped by someone tightening the bolts too tight.Most cars require a torque setting of 80 to 120 ft lbs.
I've seen them torque the bolts to 300 ft lbs. So you have to watch anyone working on the wheels.

Lexus IS2000. Between 55-60mph the steering wheel shudders. Other speeds are ok. Is this most likely to be wheel balance or something more sinister?


sounds like its just wheel balance but 2 be sure check your wheel nuts r tight also if you getting shudders under braking u may need front disc rotors skimed also when sitting still turn steering left2right make sure u cant feel any play or clunks

Procedure for replacing rear whl brgs on a 2003 escape awd


4-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Rear wheel
    • Rear brake shoes
    • Rear halfshaft nut and loosen the halfshaft from the hub
    • Wheel hub and place it in a vise
    • Inner wheel bearing race from the hub
    • Antilock Brake System (ABS) sensor bracket and move the sensor aside, if equipped
    • Parking brake cable from the steering knuckle
    • Brake line from the wheel cylinder and support the knuckle
    • Lower shock absorber nut
    • Lower ball joint by holding the ball joint stud
    • Upper ball joint
    • Coil spring while noting the location of the insulator
    • Steering knuckle cam
    • Steering knuckle
    • Snapring and press out the outer wheel bearing race from the knuckle

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    • New wheel bearing into the steering knuckle
    • Snapring to the knuckle
    • Wheel hub
    • Steering knuckle cam and hand tighten the bolt
    • Coil spring
    • Shock absorber lower nut. Torque the nut to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm) for 2002-04 models; 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
    • Upper ball joint. Torque the nut to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
    • Lower ball joint. Torque the nut to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm). Align the steering knuckle cam and torque the bolt to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
    • Brake line to the wheel cylinder. Torque the brake line bracket bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) and the brake line fastener to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
    • Parking brake cable to the backing plate. Torque the bolt to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
    • ABS sensor bracket. Torque the bolt to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm), if equipped
    • Halfshaft nut. Torque the nut to 214 ft. lbs. (290 Nm).
    • Brake shoes
    • Rear wheel
    • Negative battery cable
  2. Fill and bleed the brake system.
  3. Check and adjust the wheel alignment as needed.

2-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Rear wheel
    • Rear brake drum
    • Wheel hub nut
    • Wheel hub
    • Inner wheel bearing race from the hub
    • Snapring
    • Wheel bearing outer race from the knuckle

check the cv joints on both drive shafts. i had a dodge van that did the same, felt as though the front left tire was about to fall off, but turned out to be the cv joint at the tranny on the left shaft.

hi, there is an adjustment, on the top of the steering gear box, you will see a nut tightened against a cover on a stud. this is the sector shaft of the steering gear box. what you can do, is loosen the nut, and turn the shaft(not the nut) clockwise a quarter turn at a time(90 degrees only at one time) then check your steering wheel freeplay, you can go back and tighten a quarter of a turn again if not as tight as you want. do not tighten past one full turn! if you still can't get the steering free play tight as you want, you will have to replace the gearbox. when/if you do get the freeplay where you want, tighten the nut back down to spec. probably around 32 ft lbs. follow the steering shaft from the firewall to where the gearbox is located to find the nut i speak of right on the top or to the inside toward the engine.

Play between the steering wheel and power steering unit.


There are 2 sources of play.
There is always a universal in the shaft. It is often just a rubber disk, with crossed T adapters. And the rubber cracks.
The other is in the steering box, and there is a nut over a stud with a screwdriver slot in it.
It is best to adjust this with the wheels off the ground, pointing straight.
You loosen the nut, turn the screwdriver slot in the stud inward until there is a feeling of bottoming out. Then ever so slightly back enough to release any pressure. Tighten the nut without allowing the stud to turn.
If you do it in any other position then straight, it will be too tight when you are straight, because the steering box is intended to loosen up when not straight, to reduce wear.

How do you adjust the rear wheel bearings on a ford 350 with dual rear wheels


remove the 8 bolts from the axle, slide it out. bend the tabs that hold the bearing nut locks nuts on. there are 2 nuts that lock together with the nut lock. adj it to zero play, work it tight then loosen it. use a pair of chanel locks to work it tight than loose. stop it at zero play, you can feel it when its right! good luck and good day. sawdust46
