The starter motor is located on the joint of the bell housing and the engine, usually orientated towards the engine. This is more or less what you are looking for:-

If you can catch it failing again, test for power on the small wire going to the starter solenoid while someone tries to crank it. If you have no power, check for power at starter relay and trace backwards. If you have power, you have a bad starter. They can have intermittent failures. Hopefully your starter is easy to access, some 3 series and 5 series have the starter mounted under the intake manifold and it is necessary to removed the maifold to replace or test the starter. Good luck, hope this helps.

starter is located on the front side of the motor, easiest way to reach it is from underneath just between the radiator and the motor, two 13mm bolts hold it to the transmission

I have a nissan 200sx 1991, it wont start, the radio works, lights but won't start,????

Sounds like your starter motor is bad, but it could also be just a bad starter relay not allowing current to the starter motor. Have the relay checked first, then the starter.
