Question about Jaguar XJ6

1 Answer

1996 XJ6 The gearbox warning light comes on permanently. I have been told that this monitors a function that this model does not have. It seems that it is a fault in the monitor circuit.

I tried moving the gear lever through the gears as suggested by e-Guru and it did clear the fault but as he suggedted it was only temporary. The car does drive ok, so it could be just damp. The car had not been used for 3 weeks, while we were on holiday when the fault appeared.

Hi

It's a faulty gearbox interlock switch or it will probably be throttle, kick down switch or gear selector switches. This is a switch that reports back which gear are selected (on an AUTO box). To test if it is going - and with your foot on the brake! - move the gear selector from Park to 1st, stopping at each gear, and if the display on the dash does not show all of these positions, then the switch is going - and the transmission will be in "limp home" mode, i.e. you only have 3rd and 4th available (and reverse!).
To really verify it, you should get someone (dealer or independent) to stick a TECHII on the car to read out the codes.
With the engine off, briskly moving the gear ever from Park to 1st a few times can clear the problem - but it's usually temporary. If car drives OK it's not serious. But you need to take it to the dealer. Sometimes gearbox light comes on just because of a bit of damp in a connector, it sometimes dries on its own, or you can use wd40.

Please get back to us if you have further query else please accept the suggestion.

Change the xmission fluid and filter. If that doesnt fix it, it could be the solenids, the soleniod pack, what evey they call it on a Jag.
