Question about 1996 BMW 318

2 Answers

Hi, I own a 2000 318i BMW the battery has been flat on and off over the last couple of days. The AA tested the battery and the circuit and said that there was an intermittent drain of about 2-3amps every 3 minutes or so. I sat in the car with the doors locked & alarm armed and noticed that the the AC fan started up and ran for 30 seconds to a minute...every 3 minutes or so. This happens even if I have turned of the AC and fan controls before turninh off the engine.

The radio is the one that came with the car? Sometimes they use a powered wire for a ground to connect an aftermarkey radio or othe r device. In the fuse relay panel look by touching the relays to see if thuer hot to the touch. remove the relay you find and then see what diesn;t work. If the radio is the one that came with the car, you may have a contol module isusse or a rusted ground. Look near the battery for any rusted connections as the device may be loosing the ground that normally has it turned off.

What the best tires for 2007 bmw 750i

Per TireRack.com, there were four tire size options for a 2007 BMW 750i starting at 18 inch going to 21 inch wheels. You will need to know what size you car currently has and whether they are staggered (narrow front/wider rear) or the same front/rear. You will also need to know if they are "Run flat" or regular. The site has good testing articles and ratings of various brands. The Uniform Tire Quality Grade number rates tire longevity (higher number lasts longer 100= approx. 7,200 miles) and the letters are for traction (AA is best) and temperature (A is best).
Continental Extreme Contact DWS is available in your size works well as an Ultra High Performance All Season.

The year and model BMW that you have would let me be more specific , however they are all basically the same in the fact that the instrument cluster has 2 BMW AA batteries in it. When the battery life starts to go they need to be replaced, you can't get VDO AA batteries anymore but Energizers work just as well, but need to be replaced every couple of years unlike the there predecessor VDO batteries.

I bought an audi a3 1.6 in october 2009 not knowing that the heater or the radio didn't work-i mention this just in case it is relevant to the battery drain.approx after one month the car wouldn't start...

Hi Anne,
With all vehicles using electronic computer management systems, there is always very low consumption of power from the battery, as these systems are running all the time. However even with those systems running you should be able to leave the car parked for a period considerably longer that one week.

As the AA has confirmed that the charge rate is correct from the alternator, I would suspect the replacement battery. Make sure that the size (The amp hour capacity is correct for your vehicle) If it's too small the systems may drain it during the time indicated....

I doubt very much that you have a short circuits in the vehicle, but to be on the safe side take it along to a shop who have an auto electrician and let them carry out the relevant tests.

I suspect the battery.

BMW 735 i drains power from battery in about 2 hours

The fault can vary from any leak from the numerous circuits and the best possible way if to check the drain current from the battery. Disconnect one by one the fuses to the various circuits to confirm on the high drain circuit for probing the suspected device. You can start from the audio/ video/media/ power amplifiers/ remote system/accessories etc to confirm the fault in the device that is draining off the battery. You must try and check with isolation of the tested circuit. An easier way is to check on removal of each fuse and connecting the ammeter to see the drain, any circuit with higher drain mustl be suspected and probed. Check if you have not connected any accessories directly. Hope this advice helps you out to try. Good day

Own a 2005 BMW M3, car battery draining -battery less than year.

From what you're saying here, I believe that you simply have a bad battery. Most batteries only last 5 years, much less if they're left to sit in storage periodically. You really should charge the battery overnight and do a load test on it the next day. The person(s) you spoke to at BMW were probably sales staff and not actual technicians. Costco has very good batteries at reasonable prices.

I have a 1998 728. The battery has gone flat and as a result neither the door or boot will open with the key. Have you any suggestions on how i can get in so I can charge the battery?

I am presuming if you are in the uk. One thing would be to contact AA or similar.
Have a chat with your local BMW garage they will be able to get in.
Also one good tip is to ring a locksmith they might know how to enter the car.

Check the bulb under the engine hood. Sometimes the tilt switch goes band and the light stay's on from time to time since it's exposed to the out side. Hope that would help you.
