Question about Mini Cooper

1 Answer

My mini cooper has recently been undergoing problems with the power steering (common problem) so I had the power steering pump replaced just last week. The steering is still becoming stiff??? What else could be causing this problem as it clearly isn't the power steering pump. Also, my mini has now decided to begin completely dying on me. For example, this morning I went to get in to the car to drive to work and when I tried turning the ignition....nothing. Then I realised that the doors were not locking or unlocking either at this point! Could this be a problem with my fob? Perhaps it could be related to my power steering being stiff? Im beginning to think that my car is doomed :)

Sounds like your car could be possessed.
or
it may be a dead battery? in car or fob.
if you are positive the replacement pump is good and you have enough fluid and no air in system.
then it may be the steering linkage (a rusty stiff joint) will do that.
has the car ever been in an accident?

Where is the fuse for the power steer motor on a Mini Cooper S?

Under the hood on the left side is a fuse block. The power steering fuse is # FL4. More than likely, the power steering pump has quit. This model is know for this problem. I believe there is a replacement plan with the dealers, but check with them to make sure.

2005 mini cooper battery was dead, bought new one and now will not crank. Radio and lights come on.

Have you looked into the PSP (Power Steering Pump) relay, or the cooling fan? This problem has been know to create issues and lead to a dead battery. For more information, read this forum of MINI owners, there are quite a few with your issue, and they are trying to get a recall. the 2005 MINI's also have a headlight recall.

Where is the power steering pump and fan located on a 2003 Mini Cooper? Is this something that I should have a professional install, or easy to do myself?

the power steering pump is located at rear engine under the exhaust manifold and the fan is fitted under the pump, the fan is easy to replace but the pump is a bit hard if you never done before.

Power steering fails

I had the same problem, there is a cooling fan for the power steering pump that went out and caused some damage to the pump. The intermitent problem finally got worse and I had the pump replaced read: expensive about $1000. See if they have a rebuilt pump available.

Steering makes a whining noise - where is the fluid reservoir?

the suspect part for a power steering whine is the power steering pump, flush (very important) the system and replace the PS pump..

The powered steering in my mini is not working correctly, the steering is very heavy and it would appear the power steering doesnt exist of my mini cooper s 2004 model.

check the power steering fluid if it is full then you would have to replace your power steering pump if not you might have a leak and if so get that fixed before you destroy your power steering pump.

A constant whizzing

that whining noise is definately your power steering pump. the earlier models eg 2001-2003 just have noisy ones. so they say, if that noise become really excessive; its an early warning that its gonna fail. the newer pumps are much quiter, but i was quoted approx 1200+ CND for a new pump. I have a 2003 cooper, and the whining noise is loud. only once has the steering been really stiff, but i resolve that problem by restarting the vehicle. watch out tho, the power sttering could fail on you while your driving around a corner, and if you dont have both hands on the wheel, you'll go strait.
