I would assume that this occurs whatever level the fuel is on, may it be full. Looks like it is a wiring issue. This may be tedious but try to trace the wiring. Look for loose connections or bad wiring. Wiring insulation may have gone bad. To test this further you may want to consider directly connecting the gauge to the wiring of the tank for the sending unit and the fuel gauge. If the problem persist when you directly connected it it could be an issue with the gauge or the part inside the tank. If no issues are present it may be the wiring.

IF THE CAR IS OBD 2 COMPUTER 96 AND UP THE FUEL GAUGE GOES THROUGH THE COMPUTER. YOU WILL NEED A SCANNER LICK A TECH 2 TO READ THE SENDER. IF IT IS OLDER THAN 95 YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO CAUSE THE NEEDLE TO SWING FULL BY GROUND THE WIRE TO THE TANK. IF IT WILL NOT MOVE THEN GROUND IT AT THE GAUGE CONNECTION.

I HAVE A 1999 PONTIAC GRAM AM WHEN I START THE THE CAR THE FUEL HAQND GOES TO FULL THEN DROPS TO EMPTY AN STAYS THERE AN I NO FUEL IS IN IT

It has to be the sender unit in the tank, or the gauge in the dash, or the wiring between them. In most cases, it is the sending unit-they are quite fragile often. Usually best to replace them (not very expensive-just difficult to get to.) The sending unit will be located with the fuel pump inside the tank. They are removed as one single unit.
There is a way to test if the dash gauge itself is working properly. You have to find the wire going into the fuel tank that is from the gauge, then with key on, ground that wire to the frame-you can use a jumper wire into the fuel tank electrical connector. When the wire is grounded, the gauge will definitely move to one place (either half full, or full-but it moves and stays there). If you see that, you know the sending unit in the gas tank is bad. Do not ground that wire for more than a couple of seconds, it is lo0w voltage, but it may cause a shorting problem.

On a 1972 Chevy K5 Blazer, the tan wire from the gas sending goes to the back of the fuel gauge I understand. Where on the back of the fuel guage exactly does it go? Does any wire go to fuse block? W

Power should goto the gauge, second wire from the gauge goes to the sender unit on the tank. If there's any other terminals on the gauge or the tank they will be grounds

Gauge stuck between empty and a quarter of a tank raises to a half of a tank when truck is off is it the sender or something in wiring

most the time its the sending unit for some reason the float likes to soak up gas and does not read right or the sender is bad u can also check the wiring to the gauge by grounding out the wire to the sender and see if the gauge moves any better but some times it will just blow fuses.

The low fuel light stays on even when tank is

Hi: Your Fuel Level Sending Unit That Is Located in Your Fuel Tank Is Probally Bad. BUT before you go to taking the Sending Unit out Of your Tank Check to see if ALL Connections To And From Tank to Gauge are Conected Good. Also You could have a Fuse that Goes to the Sending Unit,in Your Fuse Block.Check And See if You Have A Fuse Labeled Fuel Sending Unit or Fuel Sensor. If you end up Replacing The Fuel Tank Sending Unit Run Your Gas Tank Down To Almost Out Of Gas Before You Start to Remove The Metal Straps Holding Your Tank Up. Cause The Sending Unit Is on Top of Your Tank ,And Your Fuel Pump Is In The Gas Tank As Well. Hope This Has Helped You Please Send Me a Vote on How my Solutions Have Helped You And Also You Can Send Me A Testamony Thank You From the WYOCWBOY

My gas gauge is really empty when it gets to half a tank is there a fuse I need to check I have an 02 s-10 blazer replaced fuel pump 2 years ago

Not a fuse if it reads any thing at all. Find the two wire harness that feeds your fuel pump and sending unit. It is near your fuel tank. It has a ground that goes to the frame near it. Unplug the connector and see what you gauge does. (key on) If you can determine the wire that becomes hot when the key is first turned on (feeds the fuel pump) put a ground to the other one to see if you get a change at your gauge.

dip your tank with a wire. if quarter tank indeed fuelpump or safety valve not opening in supply under hood. Check connection. Valve is on all modern cars for fire hazard. Check the valve by takening it out and testing it. Could be wire harnes problem also. Or filter blocked.
